RickL August 6th, 2005, 12:06 PM Never had a problem with caterpillars on orchids. I've used BT for tent caterpillars on trees. likespaphs August 6th, 2005, 12:09 PM the little $%*#ers are all over the greenhouse the damage on some buds looks like those rat b@!&@%ds i also pulled a big fat one off one of my phals after i saw almost half the leaf was gone i've got conserve here, thrips too so i figured two bugs one stone.... RickL August 6th, 2005, 12:52 PM What's in conserve? BT is a toxin produced by a bacteria that generally is infectious to caterpillars. So its very specific for lepidoptera larvae (and I find very effective on the tent caterpillar). And plants are very safe with this. likespaphs August 6th, 2005, 01:01 PM it's called spinosad http://www.dowagro.com/turf/prod/conserve.htm this part is about spinosad, most of the same info, though http://www.dowagro.com/turf/prod/spinosad.htm RickL August 6th, 2005, 01:09 PM It sounds similar to BT, and very specific to bugs (cholinesterase inhibitor). I think it would be OK Ernie August 6th, 2005, 02:08 PM I honestly believe beautiful butterflies and moths are natures camoflauge for some seriously nasty plant assassins. It's amazing how rapacious those damnable little caterpillars are. Worse than snails in my opinion. I meticulously search every plant daily for both caterpillar and eggs and you really have to pay attention to find eggs. When I find them, a good squishing is my revenge since I've seen them turn dendrobium leaves into swiss cheese in a matter of hours even at the quarter inch size. |
