Hello all, I took these at 24 hour intervals. They really show how the bloom turns from green to yellow...enjoy

I mut say that is one of the better crosses of Phrag. bessea..... does it have the trailing rhizhome that is common in older Phrag. besseae?

OT, but just an update or post, Ecuagenera has a few select Phrag. besseae outcrosses that DO NOT have the trailing rhizome most frequently seen. The plants stay in little fans, as opposed to the long rhizome. Some of the plants of older Phrag. besseae, if you don't watch them, they might just crawl out of that pot and walk away..... I believe that the non-trailing plants of Phrag. besseae are of terrestrial stock, and not of the more common and older colonies of lithophytic besseae..... I have suggested to a Paph. grower to mount his older type besseae on cork with moss and give lots of water, and am unsure if anyone has tried this. I know at MSBG (Marie Selby Botanical Gardens), they have 2 plants of besseae (that have NEVER bloomed, and have been there since Cal Dodson discovered the species), and one plant that is sitting in water with moss on the lava rock is non-trailing, from the original cliff sites, and the other is from the same site, and is trailing like a Kudzu..... I assume if enough water is given (as opposed to the lesser amounts of water as a lithophyte), then the plant has no reason to trail..... I wonder why the besseae at MSBG have never bloomed, any suggestions? They are older than I am, and are huge (about 1.5 feet tall, and 3 feet leaf span)..... the plants are hidden away, and only a few people know about the plants and can distinguish them from similar looking rare Thai Gingers.....

Hey, Mahon

How did you hear about he phrags at ecugenera? Do you know how much they are. Do you know if ecugenera has any bessea flavum? Anyone know if ecugenera will be selling Kovachii? Does anyone know if bessea flavum is a 'climber'?

Back on topic, that is a great looking flower. I would like to see more yellow phrags. Peters wallisi is especially yellow, a cross betwen these two would be great.

I know at least one person who had Ruby Slippers (wallisii x besseae) crossed w/ a yellow besseae. Don't know if they still have them though.

A little correction, Heather. Ruby Slippers is actaully besseae x caudatum and not besseae x wallisii. Maria Glanz is besseae x wallisii.

If anyone is interested, Ecuagenera is coming to Miami mid-September for an aroid show. They are willing to bring phrag orders in and mail them out. You should get in touch with them (www.ecuagenera.com). They have a price list on their website but it doesn't list kovachii.
