Just in time for the GCOS show this weekend, "Old Faithful" is blooming. It was originally purchased as A. miniatum...but you know how our taxonomists are
It is much oranger than the picture shows, but my digital camera doesn't like to photograph light orange or yellow flowers in natural light.
If you live in Florida, yes this is just a baby...and if you live here in Ohio, yes this is a specimen plant. At least that's my theory of relativity 8)
(sorry, I had to try out the smilies eventually)

Gorgeous, Jon!

I really LOVE Ascos, actually. Unfortunately I'm just not going there - love the slippers too much and I am afraid I'd neglect the Ascos, and kill any. Just don't think they'd like me much. So, I live vicariously.

A. miniatum has longer, thinner, green leaves and more reddish flowers, whereas A. garayi has thick short leaves with purple splotching and very bright yellow-orange flowers. This is what I hear, but I have yet to see the "true" A. miniatum in person.

Oh here it is. Its so tiny I have to encircle it lol.
I wish this little pug would grow up to be like yours too.

I have a question Jon, are the dark spots on the younger leaves normal on A. garayi?
Mine is doing that and not sure if its normal or if I'm missing something on care. Ascos and Vandas are not my cup of tea.

Those spots(should be purple) are one of the distinguishing features taxonomists used when separating it from miniatum. If they are sunken in, black(dead) spots, then it is probably from misting it with a hand sprayer.

Thanks for the info. They are purple spots and are only prominent on the top two or three leaves. The spots eventually disappear as the leaf matures.
