This year has been unusually cool, so my tropical water lilies haven't been blooming. Now that it is finally warming up, one of them decided to flower. I hope to share some more water lily blooms soon! This is Nymphaea "Queen of Siam". Enjoy!

What do you do with the plant before winter sets in? Do you store and winterize the plant indoors?

There are hardy waterlilies that can be stored at the bottom of the pond and live through winter, then they will come back the following spring. The tropicals can be wintered in a tub of water inside, or you can get them to make tubers (small little bulbs) which you store inside , and then you sprout them the following spring and they will grow into plants. The tropicals are more colorful than the hardies, with blues and purples. There are also red, white, yellow, orange, pink, and lavender tropicals. The hardies only come in white, yellow, red, pink, and orange.

Do you grow any lotuses? Are waterlilies also called lotuses or are they completely different?

I have grown a lotus before, but it never bloomed for me. Lotuses are related to an extent, but very different. Their leaves rise out of the water. They aren't considered a waterlily though.

Those are just your run-of-the-mill annual impatiens.

Thanks! That's what I thought they were.

Thanks! They look so identical that I can't even tell the difference.

It could have been possible that you saw the lotuses before they sent their pads out of the water. Normal lotuses will usually stand their leaves and flowers a few feet out of the water. I will find a picture of my old lotus in the old pond.

Yes I can see the difference now from that picture. Water lily leaves are more flat on the surface of the water. Thanks!
