View Full Version : Do I Have a Seed Capsule????

According to my records, I experimented with pollination on 6/22/05. The pod patent is Ruby Anniversary x Vodoo Magic 'Big Big." The pollen parent would be my roth. The flower stayed on for about 2 weeks after pollination and sort of "fossilized" during that time. Finally, I could not stand it anymore and pulled it off the ovary. There was a little "string" that had attached the flower to the ovary.

This photo was taken about 2 days ago: approximately 6 weeks after pollination. Do I have a capsule???? It does not look like what you get when non-pollinated flowers drop off. There is obvious swelling going on. The pod is nice & fat and green.

If I have a capsule, now what???? I'm not worried about the pod parent, as it is a mature plant with 2 PB growths in addition to this one, and new growths starting. It is strong and will survive. I liked the pod parent, as it was one of those "new" multifloral vinis and the idea of crossing it to roth appealed to me. Besides being the only plants I had in bloom  :Shh: , I liked the multifloral tendencies and coloration in both plants, and was hoping that the pod parent would hasten faster growth to its prodigny.

Is this viable? Could it just be an empty pod??? What do I look for? Please advise.

Looks like you've got a seed pod started! What do you do now? Watch, wait, and take good care of Mama. As far as viable seed, you won't know that until the pod matures and you have the seed checked. Start making contacts concerning flasking: whether you want to do it yourself, or hire a flasker.

I'm a mom?? Or at my age a grandma???? :whoo:

I think I will go with a flasker rather than trying to flask it myself. Not sure yet, but I don't know how to make agar, and I think I don't want to mess this up, which I probably would do. So, in the future, I may be asking about finding people who do flasking and how all of that works!!!!:D :D I hope, anyway. That would be exciting!!!!

So what next? I know something about looking for signs of pod maturity and either harvesting green or mature pod. I've read that there are viable arguments for both. I may have another capsule on a different pod parent from the same roth pollen, but it does not look as promising as this capsule does.

If this is really, truly, a seed pod, what do I do next?? Do I fertilize this plant??? Does it have special requirements???

Do I decorate the nursery in pink or blue? Only kidding, of course!!

Oh puullleeeeze! My wallisii's room is yellow! Ya got to coordinate, girl!

Seriously - It is a porcelain white background w/ nice horizontal chartreuse and pink stripes. With little brown polka dots....gonna be a bitch to paint though!

Ok, really, serious this time. Rick and I were talking about this earlier today, so this is mighty timely for me also - look forward to hearing more. I'm sending mine to Troy when the time comes - yup - up for adoption! :)

Do you get to keep some babies????

Yes,
I cannot recall all the details - but you get one flask back free. The rest can be sold or saved for species conservation. I told Rick he could take my flask, and send me a compot of little one's later. I'm not into the flasking thing - too impatient, but I like the idea of conservation.

I'll take a "few" dry seed if you can spare them? Then again most people use green pod these days - it's easier on the plant and you get "cleaner" seed.

Good luck

"If this is really, truly, a seed pod, what do I do next?? Do I fertilize this plant??? Does it have special requirements??? "

Just keep it right where it's been happily growing, fertilize normally, and try not to stress it. Make arrangements for watering on schedule (if you leave for a period), so it doesn't dry out abnormally. If you grow exclusively with natural light, you might want to consider adding just a little artificial light during the darkest part of the winter, but even that might not be necessary.

I've had Paph pods mature in anywhere from 7 to 13 months. Keep watching it carefully, especially after 7 months.

Congratulations Susan! :D So what happens next? Maybe you could start a progression series on the capsule.

Hi Marcus,

Great idea about the progression of the capsule, if it happens to be a viable one. After that, I don't know!!!

I can try to flask it myself, but I don't think I would do a very good job!!!!!. I really don't want to lose these seeds if I happen to botch it up, and the possibility for that is really high, if I were to do my own flasking. I've never tried to do this. That being said, I have not ruled this option out.

I could go from "Ebay Goddess" (hrrrmphh) to reinvent myself as "Science Wench!"

Heather,

Your "Seed Bank" reply is interesting. However, this mix, if there is a viable capsule, is not a rare species. It is just that: another mix or hybrid. That being said, would the seed bank be interested in what I have. (If I happen to have something?)
It is not a species or something that needs to be saved for posterity.

Best!

You are probably right that Troy will flask the seed, but it is not a species, so it wouldn't be offered on the Conservatory website.

You are correct about Troy's Paphreek.

If you are participating in the conservation aspect to recieve a free flask it must be a species breeding, and you need photos of the parents. You are also in front of the line to buy additional flasks at $29.50. Most flasks have about 25 seedlings. The ones I have got back so far are already deflasked.

Troy will flask hybrids but charges about $30 per flask, and you have to agree to buy at least 4 flasks. I think there is a small charge up front for setup too, but I can't remember off the top of my head. The info is available on his site.

I've never had to do anything different (culture wise) for plants with capsules. Paphs are some of the slowest maturing capsules for orchids, sometimes about a year. It seems like the single flowered guys are the slowest, and the multiflorals the fastest.
