View Full Version : Over-fertilizing
Paphgirl August 3rd, 2005, 12:15 PM Okie - so I WAY WAY WAY overfertilized a few plants this morning, mostly big ones, a couple little guys. Only a couple that are really priceless to me.
Will they be okay until I can get home this afternoon around 4:30 and give them a good flushing? How MUCH flushing are they going to need?
I hate rushing watering, it always makes for stupid mistakes. Stupid job!
couscous74 August 3rd, 2005, 12:34 PM Heather, I think those plants are done for. But there may be a slim chance for survival if you pack them up right away and send them on a vacation to me here in sunny South Florida. :innocent:
Paphgirl August 3rd, 2005, 12:36 PM :jealous:
You're mean!
(you know, I am so gullible, I always believe all of you people when you start off your sentences "I think they are done for" or "This is the crucial time..." You get me all worried and anxious!)
Sigh......
couscous74 August 3rd, 2005, 12:41 PM I'm sure they will be fine. 750 ppm is still considered "fresh water"...
I found this on some State's (I think it was Georgia) water info website:
Parameters for saline water:
Fresh water - Less than 1,000 ppm
Slightly saline water - From 1,000 ppm to 3,000 ppm
Moderatly saline water - From 3,000 ppm to 10,000 ppm
Highly saline water - From 10,000 ppm to 35,000 ppm
Ocean water contains about 35,000 ppm of salt.
Could have been much worse. :D
Ernie August 3rd, 2005, 01:44 PM Except for some eventual leaf burn, especially on the smaller ones, I doubt you'll have any problem visible anytime soon if at all. They will need the flushing though and perhaps soaking each for a bit afterwards will dilute any trapped remainder in the medium.
Paphgirl August 3rd, 2005, 01:51 PM Thanks guys!
(yup, I'm an idiot!)
Ernie August 3rd, 2005, 02:02 PM Nah, it happens to the best of us. I once carefully adjusted the valve clearance in a Mazda making sure the specifications were perfect. Started the darn car up and the engine went insane on me. Come to find out, they don't react well to inch scale settings and like millimeters much better. Duh!
RickL August 3rd, 2005, 03:04 PM I must have missed the 1st part. How much did you fertilize?
Ernie and Marcus are probably right that you won't have a problem with the stuff you have.
Some of the pleuros will pitch a fit at low TDS values though.

Sigh...yeah, Marcus outed me from something I said in an email earlier!
So, that part hadn't been included in the first part!
I missed the "the only difference is the proportions" part of this thread. So, I had been fertilizing (and did all but about 8 plants this morning before I ran out of liquid) at 125ppm which for my 2 gallon sprayer is about 2.5 tsp. per gallon. However, I should have only used about .75 tsp. per gallon when I made up the first batch of solution w/ the granular. SO, I think the ppm was closer to 700-800! LOL!!! (NOT!)
couscous74 August 3rd, 2005, 03:20 PM :nocomment: oops sorry
Wendy August 3rd, 2005, 03:22 PM Donh't send 'em to Marcus....send them here. I bet they like this nice Canadian weather better. LOL! :D
Paphgirl August 3rd, 2005, 03:31 PM No problem Marcus, it was bound to come out eventually!
I can't remember who got it exactly - Most are large - Leb (in sheath, so that needs serious flushing!), St. Swithin, Mt. Toro, Lady Is, and supardii - and a few smaller ones like my adductum and my other supardii. I think that is it though. Some of my very favorites so, sorry, they're going to have to stay with me!
