View Full Version : GRRR! Phrag. besseae var. flavum trouble....
Paphgirl July 31st, 2005, 08:46 AM Why is it always the one's I love the most? WHY???
Ok, I can't get a photo of this.
Over the last week or two, the old previously bloomed growth's leaves yellowed, browned, and I pulled off. Same thing had occurred on the first bloomed growth (not in my care then) so I figured normal die off for besseaes. Today, the new growth which had been doing just FINE has transluscent spots on the lowest and newest leaf. They aren't brown, no mush or yellowing, no smell but oddly a little wet to the touch, almost like the plant is sweating (??) I watered this plant on Friday with a 50/50 mix of rainwater and distilled. It is in seedling bark mix, some which it came in and some fresh when I repotted last March or so (I can look that date up if important.) Roots, actively growing and look good. Humidity in the area is about 70% temp around 65° and climbing.
What is going on? Is this some sort of saturation?
Help??
(oh yeah, I isolated it.) :(
Paphgirl July 31st, 2005, 09:59 AM Ok, so what is it? An hour later, and I just checked on it and there were several fresh water droplets on it.
Which, yeah (I'll put anything in my mouth too, apparently) I tasted, and taste like plain water. Not sweet or salty or bad.
So, I can only think this thing is (unbelievably) sweating, and maybe I'll put it in a brighter spot today and try to dry it out a little?
Has anyone seen this sort of thing before? What was the outcome? Good, bad, nothing to worry about?
THANKS!
Paphraguy July 31st, 2005, 10:02 AM If it's "sweating" and tastes like plain water, then it only means one thing, you're overwatering it.
Paphgirl July 31st, 2005, 10:09 AM Okay, I can buy that, but it hasn't ever done this before, and I did just water Friday and humidity is very high.
So I wonder is this a chronic issue or an instance issue?
I'll back off on the water though.
RickL July 31st, 2005, 10:44 AM I can't recall seeing this on my plants before. Also 70% humidity is only high for us. Pretty normal to low in the tropics. If it is "sweating" and you are seeing water accumulation I would increase airflow. Besseae would rather be cool than warm, so watch the temps when you increase the light level.

Thanks, I set it in a breezy spot, under my lights. Today we're having a cloudy damp day, which doesn't help.
RickL July 31st, 2005, 11:43 AM I realize that we (as orchid culturists) make allot of adjustments for artificial culture, but keep in mind allot of these plants come from places that rain for days on end, so they should be able to get wet.
So the wet is not the problem, its how to control and accomodate it.
Paphraguy July 31st, 2005, 11:49 AM I never keep my bessies too wet. Mine have experienced leaves die back and even rot when kept too wet even with plenty of air flow.
Wendy July 31st, 2005, 06:20 PM I had that happen on my Phrag Hanne Popow Heather and I sprayed it (the 'sweating' spot) with peroxide for a couple days...that seemed to help as it stopped. Never did figure out what caused it.
Paphgirl July 31st, 2005, 06:36 PM Well, no more weeping this afternoon, the transluscent spot on the new leaf is no more, and the oldest leaf though still having a few spots seems dryer.
Whew....
Thanks all!
WAH! I made my plant cry!
Ernie July 31st, 2005, 07:03 PM So it cried a bit, at least it took the time to tell you in its own special way.
