The LED systems are more energy efficient and brighter and last longer.

I also heard no heat issue with led lights.

LED is fairly new to growing plants, as we haven't seen any types of LED fixtures specifically marketed for plants. LED is so new, and pricey at the moment, that not many people have tried it. I imagine that in a few years we will see LED become more commonplace in the plant growing field.

LED is definitely better watt for watt, with fixtures producing much more light using less energy. The bulbs also last much longer than other bulbs. LED's do produce heat, but it is definitely not as much as MH or HPS.

I don't use LED grow lights but they are available. I see many on ebay http://www.slipperorchidforum.com/forum/forumdisplay.php?f=57 One example is this one http://cgi.ebay.com/NEW-120-Watt-High-Power-LED-Grow-Light-Tri-Band-R-B-O_W0QQitemZ180389006486QQcategoryZ42225QQcmdZViewI tem

i tried the 12x12 225 lamp leds you find on ebay, i wasnt that fond of them but maybe i didnt give them enough of a chance. it just seemed there was no light penetration, didnt seem to make it past the canopy even if it was place inchs above. i dont think the technology is quite there yet:mad:

i don't think anything can touch a MH or HPS.

i am interested in trying high output fluorescents, though.

Can use led light with good results but have to choose well kind of plants.
Untill now I tried them with brachys parvis, helenae, some short Dendrobiums and masdevallias with very good results.Use always with low/medium light need plats and short species(no way to grow a Cattleya guttata or a tall laelia with led)
I have used solaroasis....good quality product.

I have also an area(approx 1000 plants, mix) grown with high output fluorescents, with very good results, someway better than hps for many plants (not cattleyas,renantheras.....).
At the begining I was worryed for flowering, but after 6 months plants started flowering regularly
and some never flowered have started spikeing.
Very good results with some difficult ones like Papuan Dendrobiums and few telipogons.
If you are an indoor grower, must try...

I tried LED white tube lights produced for substitution of fluorescent lamps for indoor paph growing and are successful. They do not harm the leaves toiching the lamp; You can buy lamps with light in the 120 angle and not all around: You may choose red and blue mixed LEDs. Theese are easy obtained from China and searched on their Alibaba site/

I think HPS and MH are still the best systems but the newer LED's may get better or are already better as technology advances with time.
