Which ones are easy to grow for a beginner like myself. Thanks! orchidlover July 25th, 2009, 12:34 PM For starters I would not recommend any species with long petals. The hybrids are more forgiving and very easy to grow. Hybrids like Phrag Grande and Paul Eugene Conroy are very common plants and great for beginners. Rocco July 25th, 2009, 01:01 PM Other easy hybrids I suggest are Super Grande, Tall Tails and Schroderae. newbie July 25th, 2009, 03:15 PM Thanks guys! orchidlover July 26th, 2009, 09:53 AM You're welcome! There is another hybrid like Grande but smaller in size Phrag Predator for those who have limited space to grow slippers. dodobaby July 26th, 2009, 10:39 AM After seeing so many pics of phrags with long petals here I like to try one. I love Kovachii but since I'm a newbie I like to avoid them now and I cant afford one. Too expensive for me. Thanks anyway! dragonfly22 July 26th, 2009, 08:46 PM The hybrids with long petals are very easy to grow and beginners should have no problem growing them. Paphraguy July 26th, 2009, 10:26 PM Phrag Grande is an extremely easy to grow hybrid and they grow like weeds. I have given away many divisions to family members, friends, neighbors and to other SOF members and it is now ready to be divided again next summer. Sharonara July 30th, 2009, 11:15 AM I am facinated by the phrags with long petals and am trying to grow them outdoors under 50% shade in the hot tropics, thus far the only problem I have had is a little brown rot a the base of the fans. Grande, Giganteum and Sedenii seem susceptible. Any recommended treatment? orchidlover July 30th, 2009, 12:11 PM I am facinated by the phrags with long petals and am trying to grow them outdoors under 50% shade in the hot tropics, thus far the only problem I have had is a little brown rot a the base of the fans. Grande, Giganteum and Sedenii seem susceptible. Any recommended treatment? Hi Sharon welcome to the slipper orchid forum! Glad you could join us! :D To answer your question, apply cinnamon to the rot area and don't let that area get too wet for a few days. Keep a vigil and make sure the rot doesn't spread. Can you post pictures of the plants? It will give us a better idea. Cinnamon application is recommended but if the rot spreads fast then destroy the plants. Slipperguy July 31st, 2009, 01:48 AM Hi Sharon...welcome to the forum!:welcome: |
