The cross between Phrag. besseae with Phrag. wallisii shows very beautiful red flowers with long hanging petals.
The hybrid was registred as Phrag. Maria Glanz by her husband Franz Glanz from the Wössner Orchideen in Unterwössen in Bavaria.
The plant grows very well but needed around 4-5 years for the first flowerperiod. That's typical for the crosses with the relatives of Phrag. caudatum.

Lovely color on that one, Olaf. Are these available around here? I don't know that I've seen any around and about, though nor have I looked. Just gorgeous!

Dear Heather,
I have seen the plants in the nursery of Franz Glanz. But I don't think that he export to USA.

I don't have this hybrid yet but I do have a Ruby Slippers, so it should be quite similiar.

That's true, but also this red tone is very amazing. But the darkest colour you will find in the cross of besseae with warscewizianum.

I like these colour forms of the Phrag.-hybrids but there are also so many beautiful hybrids with more brownish or greenish colours. But normally only the red ones were shown.

Yes, I would love to get a Super Ruby someday and I'm sure they will be much darker with even longer petals.

Olaf,
That's very true. I was just thinking of this last night. There is a good article by Marilyn Ledoux about that in the Phrag. issue of Orchid Digest. I know I am guilty of getting caught up in besseae breeding for color. However, I just got a very nice czerwiakowianum which should bloom quite green according to photos I've seen and I am very excited as I don't have much (or any Phrags) that color in my collection. Looking forward to it!

Olaf,
Wow...excellent color, thanks for sharing it with us.
I have a seedling of this grex and can only hope it blooms out to be this nice.

Olaf,

The most beautiful Phrag hybrid there is! I have seen a couple of pictures of this hybrid. All very similar in shape and length of petals. They vary from as bold red as you have shown to fiery orange. I have yet to purchase one :( yet.

Thanks,

Wow pretty cool looking! Maybe I will quietly slip on over to the dark side err phrag side. I would need to definitely use a bigger light.
