View Full Version : Slipper books - in search of recommendations
silence882 July 22nd, 2005, 09:40 PM Hello everyone, I have been reading through the posts and seen a number of books and authors mentioned (as well as magazine articles), so I immediately felt inadequate and decided to ask for recommendations in building a list of must-haves and nice-to-haves (with an eye toward building a taxonomic structure). Currently my list is as follows:
I have:
Cash, Catherine. The Slipper Orchids. 1991.
On the way:
Braem, G., Chiron, G. Paphiopedilum. 2003.
Wanted:
Birk, Lance. The Paphiopedilum Growers Manual. 1984.
Cribb, Philip, et al. Slipper Orchids of Vietnam. 2003.
Cribb, Philip. Slipper Orchids of Borneo. 1997.
Koopowitz, H., Hasegawa, N. Novelty Slipper Orchids: Breeding and Cultivating Paphiopedilum Hybrids. 1991.
McCook, Lucile M. An annotated checklist of the genus Phragmipedium: The New World conduplicate-leaved slipper orchids. 1998.
Any suggestions on additions to or subtractions from this list would be appreciated, as would any sources for the want list, as most are not readily available. Thanks

couscous74 July 22nd, 2005, 09:43 PM May I suggest the 2nd edition of Lance Birk's book instead... It was published in 2004, and I believe the color photos are worth it. The rest of the info is more or less the same as the first edition.
Ernie July 22nd, 2005, 11:09 PM Just my personal opinion but I would add Rebecca Northen's book, Home Orchid Growing to that list. I think she's up to fourth edition by now.
TADD July 23rd, 2005, 07:10 AM I second the second edition of Birk's book. The habitat and culture info on each page of the photos is really nice. The rest of the book is so-so. But the species pages are awesome(the only reason to get the book in my opnion). The rest of the book is general info you can find on the web or in any orchid culture book really. Koopowitz and Hasegawa's book is a goodie fom what I have seen That's all I have to say about that...

Stephen,
I encountered the checklist by McCook a couple of days ago on the list of a (secondhand) book seller, which is specializing in orchidbooks, and is connected to the Dutch orchid society (N.O.V.). It costs only €6,00. I don't know where you are located but this might be an option to get it. I saw that The Orchid Digest no longer has it for sale on their website. If you're interested send me a PM and I give you all the details where this list can be found. It's kind of completed to explain and I don't want to bother the rest of the group.

RickL July 25th, 2005, 07:30 PM I haven't got to see any of Braem's books, but Cribb's are more usefull for taxonomy since it has a basic key, and has the numeric data for plant parts, and there are good little range maps. Also see the website for Nascent orchids for good range maps.
Lance's book is better for climatic conditions and culture info.
I also like Averyanovs book on Vietnamese slippers (which covers about 20% of paph species anyway).
Stephan July 26th, 2005, 03:27 AM You could also try here - their second hand catalogue changes reasonably regularly (sadly). So you never know what you'll pick up.

I just got Birk's manual from them today and it's where I got most of my other better Orchid books.
Cheers

Mahon July 29th, 2005, 01:23 AM If anyone needs help in obtaining any of the Paphiopedilum books (or any of the slipper books for the most part), I can help anyone who is looking for any of Cribb's books, and I think Koopowitz's book. What I will do is give you a price for the book, as I will get it new a the Selby Giftshop. I will charge the price exactly as it costs me, plus shipping for the book. I am offering this as I am over there often, and I get some discounts for being a menber, etc....
let me know, I think there is about a 15%-20% discount on it. I will include the reciept as well, of course. There are many books, and only Vol. I-III of Dodson's Native Ecuadorian Orchids (cost $80, and I can get them signed, if you'de like)..... I know that you can save quite a bit if you buy through Selby, but you have to be a member and all, which is not cheap. There also is Paul Martin Brown's FL orchid Field guide, and if anyone is looking for Tropica (not Exotica), I have one I am willing to sell, in great condition, or Selby has it for $850 in crappy condition.
Too bad no one bought Dr. Luer's book from me.....

silence882 August 6th, 2005, 09:32 PM Hello again,
I have tracked down many of the books on my list through google and with the help of members of this forum. As of now, I have only two which I cannot find a reasonable source for:
Koopowitz, H., Hasegawa, N. Novelty Slipper Orchids: Breeding and Cultivating Paphiopedilum Hybrids. 1991. (found one in Australia, hoping for a source in the US)
Gruss, Olaf. Albino Forms of the Genus Paphiopedilum. Caesiana: 2002. (found it available at orchidbooks.com, but their prices for every other book are exorbitant so I'm assuming this book is way overpriced as well)
Taiwan Paphiopedilum Society. Paphiopedilum in Taiwan I. (Don't know if this book actually exists, but I have II and III, so I'm assuming it does)
If anyone knows of sources for these books, please leave a followup or shoot me a message.
Mahon - If the Koopowitz-Hasegawa Book is available at MSBG and you could send me a copy, please let me know. It would be much appreciated

Olaf August 7th, 2005, 06:15 AM Dear Stephen,
only a short question about the
Gruss, Olaf. Albino Forms of the Genus Paphiopedilum. Caesiana: 2002
What was the price for?
Perhaps it would be cheaper to buy this journal directly in Italy. I could send you the mailadress of the editor Prof. Franco Bruno.
When you can wait, then wait for the 4th issue of The Orchid Digest this year. There you will find a similar article with many pictures.
Best greetings
Olaf

phragfan August 11th, 2005, 11:07 PM Does anyone know a source for Braem's Phaphiopedilum for less than $100 US?
silence882 August 14th, 2005, 02:20 PM Hello again,
Olaf, The price for the albino book was US 43. Thanks for the heads up on the article, I can wait for the issue to arrive in October (I'll be sitting by my mailbox if anyone needs me.....).
phragfan, I got a copy of Braem's new book for $81.50 including shipping at: http://www.orchidpainter.com/braem.htm
Thanks all for the help
