View Full Version : Phragenstein.
Dwayne Dibbley July 20th, 2005, 05:29 PM Was not going to post piccies of my Phrag SA as i,ve posted enough on other forums but
it may give some of you a giggle as this was described to me as a windowsill orchid.

Spike was just over 80" high(from medium to top flower) when i cut it.
I did this to put some of the plants energies into the new spikes.
The spike had over 70 flowers in 10 months.
A couple of links to when it was in full flow(in my groroom).

It has 10 growths now(2 already bloomed & 2 blooming) , it only had
3 last year when i bought so i think i,ve got growing this beast correct for a change.
Paphgirl July 20th, 2005, 05:39 PM LOL!
Yeah, and that would be the example of exactly WHY that and (no more of) its' parents and progeny are not allowed in my house.
Good growing, I think!
Gideon July 20th, 2005, 05:45 PM :jawdrop: That is tremendous, I still can't believe the size of it, thanks for posting.
Rob how does yours measure up?...and TADD, I don't think it will grow under your lights, you will have to wait for the greenhouse :poke:
Paphraguy July 20th, 2005, 05:46 PM Since sargentianum is one of the parents, I'm not surprised how tall your spike has reached. Nicely grown! :clap2:
Jon in SW Ohio July 20th, 2005, 05:57 PM Very nice!!
I love monster phrags and that definitely fits the bill.
Window sill orchid?...kinda like me telling my mom to smell the bulb. echinolabium since it smells like chocolate
Jon
TADD July 20th, 2005, 07:56 PM You sure? Maybe I could put them on their side! :)
couscous74 July 20th, 2005, 08:36 PM Wow, that thing is huge. It might work in my windowsill/sliding-glass-door. Very impressive.
dustyatticstuff July 20th, 2005, 09:20 PM :jawdrop: That is tremendous, I still can't believe the size of it, thanks for posting.

Park Bear July 21st, 2005, 08:45 AM that is pretty neat, I might have to look for one of those.
Greenpaph July 21st, 2005, 08:50 PM Dwayne,
Spectacular! What is the hybrid name?
thanks
Dwayne Dibbley July 22nd, 2005, 07:56 PM It,s just tagged as Phrag Sorcerers Apprentice , i suspect it,s a Eric Young Foundation
bred plant as all the other Phrags are their typical offerings(Bouley Bay , Belle Houge Point ,
Tara etc).
dustyatticstuff July 22nd, 2005, 09:37 PM Dwayne,
I love the expression on your face as you stand next to that monster spike. I'm not sure whether it is an expression of (1) pride (2) disgust (3) resignation (4) Stoic Englishman expression (5) all of the above.
I think it is beautiful!!! I never thought a S/A spike could get that big. Thanks for posting!!
Dwayne Dibbley July 23rd, 2005, 04:49 AM Not the best piccie of me.
When i built the g/h this year i took into consideration the height of the plant
& realised it would be in the eaves. So i had to dig the base deeper.Unfortunately
i have back problems(to many years lifting weights) & i put my back out digging
the solid clay of my garden.
So the look is of mixed feelings , i could quite easily have kicked the plant around the garden
but also of stoic pride that i managed to grow it to the size & didn,t cut the spike to make
life easier .
paphiogrower July 23rd, 2005, 08:43 AM The phrag Sargentianum is comum this inflorescence very tall cause it is blooming for 7 months in nature, so the inflorescence grow. It likes a sun cause in site the flats with small vegetation, it like sandy and earth in your roots !!!! In Brazil has since São Paulo until Bahia, but in São Paulo haven't more.
The hibrid mem.saint clements (besseae x sargentianum) has a inflorescence big too(about 1.0 meter), for besseae that is a small plant (look)
