When a paph buds from a new growth, does that mean that there will never be another growth from that again?

When a growth goes into bud, it will have that one spike, and no more spikes, but the plant will continue to make new growths and when each one matures, each should bloom. Does that make sense?

I'm not sure that was exactly the question. I think that maybe he is asking about new vegetative growth. Sometimes, you get only one new vegetative growth from a fan. Sometimes you get many. I don't think it is the case (for most paphs that I know of) that an older fan cannot send out a new growth. There are dormant 'eyes' that can activate at any time. There is probably a finite number of eyes to pick from. But, you might get a new growth from one side of a fan this year, and a new growth from the other side of that same fan the next. Until the initial fan senesces, I think it is still capable.

So, 'back divisions' of paphs might break new leads. Just like back divisions of cattleyas. Is that the question?

Hmm, thanks Rob, that interpretation makes sense as well.

Now I have another related question. I have several plants (PEOY, St. Swithin, laevigatum, etc.) that have put out 2 or three new starts all at the same time. Generally, one of the three takes off very quickly and the others sort of languish around, growing at a much slower rate. Will the pokey ones eventually mature, generally, or with the plant putting most of its energy into the quick grower, will the others eventually just stop and die off?

Thanks guys, between your comments I got the answer I was looking for. I quess its like the cattleyas, once it blooms it just leaves the leaf and pb.

I notice that as well Heather on my multiflorals. Some new growths don't seem to go anywhere. Meanwhile other growths are growing well despite in many cases having started well before. I'm just wondering will they ever kick on. They all look healthy, but they are just not growing.

I have found some Paphs (particularly the mottled leaf plants) only put on one new start per growth. For example that Jerry Buote I posted 2 weeks back does this. For this plant I just cut the rhizome dividing the plant in two. This forced it to put on two new starts per growth. Worked like a charm.
