View Full Version : The world's easiest Vanda

Some long Thai name x some other long Thai name... I can write it down if anybody cares. The form is weird. But it has excellent color, and is in bloom pretty much all the time. It has another spike coming, but you can't see it in the picture. Flowers last forever (all winter on one spike). This is a Vanda that I had outside until there was frost on the ground, and it still bloomed within a few weeks of bringing it into the greenhouse.
A little odd, but definitely a keeper.
Paphgirl July 19th, 2005, 10:42 AM Love the colors - it really reminds me of an Oncidium though! Thanks for posting!
couscous74 July 19th, 2005, 11:45 AM Very nice colors, Rob. Does your greenhouse get enough light inside for a Vanda? Do you keep it with the Paphs?

For this vanda, evidently... There are various light conditions in the greenhouse. I keep the higher light things near the south or west wall. This particular plant was hanging right up against the plastic on the south wall, from one of purlins.

Dwayne Dibbley July 19th, 2005, 01:26 PM That is superb & quite unusual.

You could grow this one... Vandas don't much like me either, this one is easy. Of course I only have the one. Maybe I should clone it.
couscous74 July 19th, 2005, 02:11 PM So, umm Rob ... where'd you get it from? :poke:
Oh wait, let me guess... some Thai name? :D

Nope, it wandered in with the greenhouse. I have a lot of things that came with the greenhouse. The better part of everything in there, actually. Maybe a dozen vandas that I normally wouldn't have purchased for myself. Several hundred phals and a thousand or so minicatts, too...
I can't quite tell from the tag where it came from. No vendor name. It is a fairly old plant though. I'll try to remember to write down the names tonight. Perhaps it has been registered by now.

Sounds reasonably familiar, might be one of the parents, but even when i was in Bangkok for several weeks I couldn't remember which street I was staying on. I just can't seem to wrap my head around Thai. I'd love to go back for a month or two and give it another try though... Wonderful place to visit, and the orchids are amazing. Food too.
I'll look up the parents tonight, I promise. I bet it does have V. merilli in it, though not as a direct parent.

Is that the name that sounds like (forgive my phonetic spelling) "krueng thae-yep"?
TADD July 19th, 2005, 04:13 PM Good Looking Vanda! Nice inheritence!
Greenpaph July 19th, 2005, 10:59 PM Littlefrog,
Nice colorations! Flowers look like they are about 1" across? Are they fragrant?
thanks
Gideon July 20th, 2005, 01:00 AM That is lovely, I love the Vandas, I will only know once winter is over, whether they like living with me, when I started buying them last year the vendour said that they are easy plants and no need to pamper them in the winter...he was wrong, I am losing two already
cliokchi July 20th, 2005, 02:12 AM hi gideon,
what vanda were the ones that died ,did they die when it was cold or the hot season?
basically you can divide the vanda in two groups the ones that need high temperature thw yearround and
the cooler growing ones
what else you grow without problems
kindest regards

Thanks, maybe I'll get to go back sometime. Although if you sent me a message, it didn't get here. If anybody else has sent me messages through the website and I haven't responded, better let me know!
You are amazing. The cross is V. Kampirananda x Ascda Seechang. That has been registered as Ascda. Chocolate Con Queso. I see two awards, similar descriptions to my plant.

The best part is that it really fits... Be nice if it smelled like chocolate, too. But no scent, at least no scent that I notice.

Park Bear July 21st, 2005, 08:47 AM very nice :clap2: , I've never tried a vanda yet.
