Ok, call me slow, but I have had Birk's book since it was published, and probably read through it hundreds of times. Yesterday I was checking on Paph urbanianum(in his book) and the page next to it (p.132) has parnatanum listed. I had never seen this specie or tyhis page for that matter. Doh!. I can't seem to find much information on the net, anyone in the world have any experience with this beautiful specie? Are they available anywhere in the world? It looks similar to a Papa Rohl, but a little lighter in color. Thanks and yes I am slow! I rechecked every specie page in the book to make sure I hadn't missed any others.

p.s. The best page of course is still p. 97!!!! :poke:

It is an artificial hybrid like sugiyamanum and several others "new" species, that has been "discovered" by the same staff that found stonei sticktopetalum and P.xJogjae...

Dear Tadd and papuanum,
Paph. parnatanum (Synonym Paph. usitanum) is really a distinct species. I had the good luck to analyze some plants in flower and they are really distinct from all the others.
You can find good pictures on the page of Toshinori Tanaka
http://www.orchid.or.jp/orchid/people/tanaka/orchid/org/newpaph9.html
We had discussed in Germany a long time if it could be a natural hybrid but we decided that it isn't.
You wrote that in the past some plants came from the same nursery and these were hybrids. The plants of Paph. parnatanaum were bought from Parnata and he asked around if somebody would like to describe this species. I was asked also. But another orchidfriend asked me some months before and the description was prepared as Paph usitanum and was published some weeks after the description of my french friend William Cavestro.
I think also that Paph. sugiyamamum is distinct species. I had my doubts before I saw some plants in flower in Taiwan.
For this stime best greetings
Olaf
Whe you are interesting for, then I could mail you some pictures of, perhaps you can place them in this forum.

I'd be more excited if they all looked like the one in Lance's book, but I seen a few other pics that were not as distinctly colored, so I've been wanting to see more material before putting in the effort to find some.

Just before I looked in the book of Lance for Paph. parnatanum. I have some doubts if these plants are the same which William Cavestro described as Paph. parnatanum and which were later described as Paph. usitanum.
For the first view the flowers are more greenish and have not so much reddish in.
How I wrote before, I could send some pictures of the true plants, the typespecimen of both descriptions.
Just this time I have not the possibility to place these pictures in my message. I must learn it.
Best greetings
Olaf

Hallo there, I´m a newbe but I have a Paph. parnatanum. I´ve got it for about 2 years ago. This year it has a new sprout and a flower is on its way. It will be interesting to compare with others:hyper:
