There is possible save them !! In the pot, you put a few sphagnum just in the botton , after put live moss ( I belive that you can buy in flowers stores) , plant in the live moss. Water every day !!! cause de live moss is very open after 60 days , you can to plant in definitive pot , the roots is almost ok !!! A lot of species I got a sucessful !!!

TADD July 17th, 2005, 07:16 AM I would have tossed it in the garbage  I am too lazy to put that much(which is really little) effort into a plant, unless it was a fairrieanum or it's hybrids :)

If you can search through old posts look up "Wahh, Help save my rootless wonder" (in this Paph section), and "Live Moss JUJU" (in the Orchid Discussion section).
This is a pretty active topic.
Bozo July 17th, 2005, 06:35 PM looks like a brachy. stupid brachys.
RickL July 17th, 2005, 07:59 PM Sometimes they just can't help themselves :( :(

RickL, It os true sometimes is impossible to save them, if the plant is thin o don´t has a "gem" (i don´t know the name in english, it is same a protocorn), well if this plant has a protocorn thats possible caude I did for many friends and too much diferents species brachys, parvs, etc...
PS - If somebody knows the name in english please tell me

Hi Paphio
I'll take a "stab" and suggest you're either talking about a root "bud" or the "germ" (?) of a root. I get the idea though and if a thickhead like me can get it I'm pretty sure the others understand as well.
Cheers
Stephan

My guess is you are talking about the root meristems.

Milda July 26th, 2005, 04:39 AM Hi all!
I would have tossed it in the garbage I am too lazy to put that much(which is really little) effort into a plant, unless it was a fairrieanum or it's hybrids
But you can learn a lot if you try
Don't know if this will bring anything new since "sphag and bag" is very good explained above. I wrote this yesterday to a person who is quite new to orchid growing.
Try to find a clear plastic bag big enough for your phal. But be "prepared", your plant might loose a couple of leaves, that's what mine did. If your plant is big, you can also take out all the compost from your pot, fill it with sphagnum, and put the plastic bag over the plant.
I am treating a Cattleya this way now , and it has just got some new healthy roots.
I hope you can get some sphagnum moss, don't know if you can do this without sphagnum. I suppose you can buy dried New Zealand sphagnum at any orchid supplier in US. Here in Norway, I can just go out side and collect sphagnum
The sphagnum must be moist (not wet, than your new roots will rot) and loose. It doesn't matter if the sphagnum moss dries up now and then, it's much worse if it is too wet.
The first days, I let the plant be in the bag, just checking everything is alright. I use to put it a place that is slightly warmer (but not too hot!!), on my bathroomfloor, or near the warm water heater(don't know what you call it). Don't let the plant be exposed to sun, can be too much to handle for the plant. If the leaves are limp, you will see that they seem to get their strength back (can take some time). That's a good sign, your plant has got used to it's new invironment!
After a couple of days, open the plastic bag for some hours each day. When you see new roots, be very careful!! The roots will do fine as long as the roottips are green. If your sphag is too wet, it will rot in no time. I have a phal seedling in sphag just now, and I didn't check careful enough when the new root arrived, so now it has got black tip (rot) :? so I have to hope for new roots! Don't give up, it can take months. My phal had some "neardeath" experiences, but now it's a small healthy plant. It was the first plant I saved this way, and I have done the same thing to several others later in shorter time. So don't give up even if Phals is not the easiest plant to save this way. That's because it's growing upwards (if you understand what I mean) Most orchids get new growths beside the old ones. They are easier to treat because the new roots will always come when it is producing a new growth.
Good luck!!
Milda
