View Full Version : suggestions?
likespaphs July 16th, 2005, 12:38 PM i worked a bit of overtime recently and now have a few dollars burning a hole in my bank account. i figure a paph would fill that hole. i'd like to get something in bud, preferably a species. any suggestions? i checked orchids limited, orchids.com, parkside but nothing jumped out.
perhaps i should try for marriott's bellatulum on ebay as someone stole mine a few years ago. one problem with public greenhouses.....
Ernie July 16th, 2005, 02:14 PM There's a huge, 6 growth budding Puppentanz and an 8 growth Clifton Booth and Shoji Grace in bud on eBay selling in 6 hours or so which look really interesting. Considering their size, they seemed like a decent roll at the dice table.
If you need to find them, locate orchids in Home and Garden, type in paph and select ending soonest. You'll see the list.
Paphgirl July 16th, 2005, 02:17 PM I'm hunting around a little - will let you know if I see anything interesting.
Mmmmm, shopping.....
TADD July 16th, 2005, 05:43 PM I think I like the bellatulum on ebay! I have one of the Japanese ones form him I love the heavy spotting and smearing more than the 50/50 one. A nice fairrieanum rounds out a collection nicely I have heard.... :poke: You are lucky to be able to go shopping!
Ernie July 16th, 2005, 07:03 PM Hrumphhh, I just got back from shopping and the only thing they had was silly NOID phals that were fading. I did score a new fluor lighting fixture though since my old one was eating a tube a month.
Thanks to "someone" here (I won't point fingers), I did buy a Neofinetia last week. You really have to love credit cards sometimes, right Rob?
likespaphs July 16th, 2005, 08:56 PM the boss was out of town most of may so i got to work every day. fun fun fun (did that sound sincere? i've been practicing)
i was thinking of ratcliffe's special, but i don't really want a venustum and i have a dayanum and stonei, but i like both of those and wouldn't mind another
perhaps i'll get a couple victoria mariae.
i called and left a message inquiring about larger stonei's but haven't heard back from them.
i'm so excited

You should definitely mention that you are a forum member. Paul will love that.
Ernie, it's all Jon's fault for showing us his Neos. Now he's got TADD thinking about ponds. Jon sent me an Ogonmaru division yesterday. I just got it potted this afternoon. I'll take a pic tomorrow and post it.
Paphgirl July 16th, 2005, 09:56 PM Hey - if Paul has large stoneis, LET ME KNOW!
I'm in the market in a bad way!
I'm also on a multi day stretch at work, but I just will get time off, not extra cash. Bummer....on one hand, cash = more plants, but more time=quality time w/ plants....sigh...I am missing them and also wishing to hang out w/ my wee fishies!

I wonder where all the stonei have gone... I grew out two flasks a while ago (a long while ago). They did quite well. Then various people started asking for them, a few at a time. No big deal. Then the guy I bought the flasks from called me and wanted to know if I had any extra, so I sold him most of the rest. Cheap. I now recognize this as a sinister plot to deprive me of stonei... *grin*. Something must have happened to the global supply, and nobody told me in time. I could have made a small fortune, I guess. :( Now I don't know if I have more than two or three plants left, and you'll have to pry them out of my cold, dead hands...
Anyway, if you are looking for species, let me recommend some of the sequential bloomers. Primulinum is nice. Kalinae is quite nice, but hard to find. I'm quite fond of moquettianum these days (and yes, I finally did sell my last blooming one - now all I have is a big compot). Of course, my favorite species are wardii and sukhakulii. Delenatii is always good, and easy to grow. Appletonianum (or hainanense, or wolterianum) is just adorable. No collection is complete without a rothschildianum.
Although I'm a species nut, I think I've probably covered my must have list. If you have limited dollars and limited space, I think most other paphs are better represented by hybrids. For example, you could buy a lawrencianum and/or a callosum (and I have, several times! *grin*) but I think the hybrid, Maudiae is far more rewarding. Similarly, a good Susan Booth or St. Swithin probably covers your multifloral needs, for a while. Armeni White is far easier to grow than armeniacum, although it isn't yellow. Psyche is an excellent alternative to bellatulum (which I find tricky to grow).
Why would a self professed species nut say awful things like that? I've seen too many bad examples of species, that is why. For example, last spring I saw the worst sukhakulii in the world being sold for way too much. There were at least a dozen on the table, and they were all small, poorly colored, and bad form. Yet they were still selling? Get a Macabre and save yourself some bench space. Too many people are making random sib crosses or selfings, just because they know they can get a premium for a 'species'. Bah! Besides, we can't all have everything, and there are plenty of really nice hybrids out there that get overlooked.

Hee hee! *grin* I love it when people follow the rules. Did you get one from New World?

Rob, your rules came up several times over the weekend. I think Marcus has been following them as well!
(~Paphgirl, still jonesing for a mature stonei no matter WHAT Rob says!)

Well, when you find one... Actually, for you people looking for stonei, I can probably set you up. If nobody had tried already, contact Terry Partin (Orchid Trading Co). tlpartin@aol.com I'm sure he has some bigger ones. Tell him I sent you, not that this will help... *grin* And I know a guy in Columbus who has dozens. I don't want to post his e-mail address to the world though. If Terry doesn't have any, I can ask.
Leo Schordje (www.schordje.com) is selling stonei flasks. So is Orchid Inn, I believe. In three or four years we will be swimming in stonei. Although I have been told they can be difficult to establish from flask.
couscous74 July 18th, 2005, 11:14 AM  I have definitely been following Rob's Rules lately. I might need to follow SteveT's lead and rent an apartment for the orchids.

Fortunately or unfortunately, most of my purchases come from eBay as the least expensive and most readily available to me. I'm aware that it's a crap shoot but I'm really very selective in what I buy and I've been lucky so far. I do occasionally buy from on-line dealers but too often the ones I really like are too far out of my price range. Heck, I have a pending order from Orchid Inn right now that's driving me nuts saving up for.
likespaphs July 18th, 2005, 01:51 PM i'm also a species fan, though i've been tempted by some multifloral and charlesworthii hybrids lately
i've been thinking of chamberlainianum, perhaps charlesworthii or a sukhakulii, though chamberlainianum may win if it comes with a victoria mariae
i grow in a hot greenhouse (the boss won't let me turn the heat lower than 75) so i've been looking for things that go well there
perhaps ciliolare
i'm hoping to bloom my roth, though i think i never will

Get a sanderianum. They are supposed to like heat. At least that is what I have heard. Supposedly they will grow like weeds in that temperature. I've never had the spare gallons of propane just lying around to give that a try, though.
likespaphs July 22nd, 2005, 10:00 AM found a place with bs stoneii...
but they're in malaysia
minimum order doesn't seem bad and the prices seem wonderful....
