View Full Version : Bulbophyllum echinolabium
Jon in SW Ohio July 14th, 2005, 09:28 AM Well this guy just opened yesterday, this is the one I mentioned in an earlier thread that was tagged as Bulb. onkostellida.
It smells impressively putrid and attracted a few flies(one of which stole my pollinia) as you can see in the last two photos.

Park Bear July 14th, 2005, 08:18 PM saw this plant last night....good thing it was last night as it only fragrant in the day  , It is a very nice looking plant and I'm sure I will be adding a few more bulbos to my collection
Greenpaph July 14th, 2005, 10:44 PM Jon,
Thanks for the great photography!
Jon in SW Ohio July 14th, 2005, 11:10 PM Lowell, you're lucky it was cool in the arboretum...at noon with the light rain and warm temps this sucker out stenched every amorphophallus I've ever bloomed. Puts my other echinolabium and bulbos to shame as well.
Now to get a Bulb. beccarii...I hear the artist who was sketching the type specimen fainted from the stench, describing it as a herd of dead elephants simmering in the sun.
Let me grow my bulbos up a bit more and I will give you some divisions you're wife will really love.
Jon
RickL July 14th, 2005, 11:18 PM It's a fantastic flower no matter how much it stinks.
Very cool Jon, and I agree it looks like a classic echino.
Great shot with the fly too.
Park Bear July 15th, 2005, 08:43 AM thanks Jon, I think
The wife shouldn't care too much, with all of my fish smells in the house
