My very first Phragmipedium, purchased in bloom with first open last Feb. 24th. Blooming as of today - first to rebloom. This is (I always feel like I'm at the Westminster dog show when I say that!) Phrag. St. Peter (Eric Young 4N Mont Millais AM/RHS x longifolium 4N)

I'm not entirely thrilled with it, frankly. The dorsal has been reticent to separate and become erect. Perhaps it is just me being pre-mature paphgirl as always. Also, the pouch is small and rather a bit ragged looking. The exception is the color. The red is significantly darker, richer, thicker than last year, by a lot. It was much more an orange/coral color. I'm surprised by the depth of the color this year (though the dorsal looks washed out also.) Which means I'd also like to discuss the merits of tetraploid - but that is another thread...

Thanks for looking. Now, I know this is dark, however, the color is really QUITE accurate! Much different than last year! You will get the idea anyway, until I get a sunny day and can try again - will update of course!

Really loving the richer color of this year's blooming. I just can't believe how different it is! Can anyone shed light on *why* it might be so much richer red? Is this a light/temperature thing or just that plants improve with age? Thanks!

Very nice! For me, my plants actually  it has always been conditions and maturity. As my plants get older, flowers are larger and colors to me look deeper and more intense. Last year, when my IE was outside all summer, the flowers came out much darker than usual.

First time getting two blooms to remain on this at once. Lasted for 2 days so far....seems a lot stronger this blooming than the first a year ago.

Very nice with 2 flowers open at once! Your window also looks quite bright. Your plants must really enjoy the extra bright light!
