View Full Version : Phrag. fischeri
lienluu July 8th, 2005, 09:55 PM First bloom from a seedling from Orchids Limited that is just starting to open up (though i've already damaged one of the petals). I'll try to take some better pictures tomorrow, not enough lighting tonight. I though tthe staminode was really interested.

Park Bear July 8th, 2005, 11:23 PM looks like it will be a keeper
nyorchids July 9th, 2005, 05:03 AM looks nice!
Paphraguy July 9th, 2005, 09:07 AM Very nice, do post another photo when it is fully opened. Is it fragrant yet?
Gideon July 9th, 2005, 10:45 AM Lovely colouring, very nice
RickL July 9th, 2005, 12:42 PM I like it

TADD July 9th, 2005, 04:31 PM Nice and compact! Well grown.
Paphgirl July 9th, 2005, 07:26 PM Very pretty - great color!
I do love the micropetalum species AND many of their hybrids!
Can't wait to see it fully open. Thanks Lien!
lienluu July 10th, 2005, 03:37 PM Here's a better shot that really shows off the staminode which I think has such a neat shape. I guess it's not supposed to be that shape? But still neat.

couscous74 July 10th, 2005, 03:44 PM Very nice, Lien. :clap2: This is definitely on my short list of choices for my first phrag.
lienluu July 10th, 2005, 03:47 PM I don't smell anything. Is it supposed to be fragrant?
Paphgirl July 10th, 2005, 03:51 PM I don't smell anything. Is it supposed to be fragrant?
Lien that is such a gorgeous flower! Love it!
I have Beverly Fischer which is St. Ouen x fischerii I thinkg (there's a pic around here somewhere) and it is raspberry scented most strongly in the morning. Very lovely, and I think inherited from the fischerii.
Paphraguy July 10th, 2005, 04:12 PM Yes, fischeri is fragrant during the day especially on a warm humid day.
TADD July 10th, 2005, 05:39 PM I want it now! Send it to me!!!! :)
couscous74 July 10th, 2005, 06:49 PM This one is definitely my favorite-looking small phrag.
Paphgirl September 21st, 2005, 12:15 PM I don't pay close enough attention. This is a really small plant! I didn't realize that. I figured it was closer to schlimii's size.
Mine looks just like Lien's second photo. :D Hopefully it will bloom!
Oh, and I've finally learned to spell it. One 'i'. How embarrassing!
Paphgirl September 21st, 2005, 06:16 PM Okay...here we go. Lovely wee thing...
And now, all together please "Finger's Crossed!!"
(except Tadd, who clearly jinxes me, lol!)

Paphraguy September 21st, 2005, 06:27 PM Looks cute! I like!
TADD September 21st, 2005, 06:34 PM Oooohhhh I am jealous!!!!! No jinxes or hexes here.....
Paphgirl September 21st, 2005, 08:22 PM I thought I would just add, that the spike on this plant really reminds me in it's wirey way of Mexipedium xerophyticum. And the size of the bud. I'm curious to see how this turns out. Never seen one in person.
I've been thinking about this all day and wondering how close the DNA is on these two. Besk? Anyone?
wolfcreekmn September 21st, 2005, 09:14 PM Hi Heather, nice looking plant i didnt think they were that small . Did you get your plant from Orchid's Limited ? This plant was named after Jerry Fischer. He was the one that found it in shipment of diffrent stuff he got, quite awhile ago.
Hi Lien, very nice color on your flower.
Beskriver September 22nd, 2005, 01:52 PM Hi:
Is your plant's staminode folded like that of Paph micranthum, or is it just narrow?
Besk

I was looking at that too. It looks to me as if the actual staminode is completely missing.

Paphgirl September 24th, 2005, 05:07 AM I was looking at that too. It looks to me as if the actual staminode is completely missing.
RZu.
But if that's the case, what's the yellow?
I'll try to find out from Lien, he's been busy w/ school lately, so not posting/reading much at all.
Rob Zuiderwijk September 24th, 2005, 08:38 AM But if that's the case, what's the yellow?
The two yellow "spots" one can see on the second flowerphoto is part of the colouration of the involded edge of the pouch.
RZu.
Paphgirl September 24th, 2005, 08:46 AM Okay, having not seen up close and personal yet, just looking at photos online just now, I haven't seen anything else that really captured that part. Staminoid is always sort of "in the way".
I guess I'll have my chance soon enough to check it out. :)
Thanks Rob.
Rob Zuiderwijk September 24th, 2005, 08:55 AM The staminode is always covering up this part of the pouch indeed.
Yes, you have a very nice plant there. And I throughly hope that this one has a staminode. I mean I would like my Phrags to be complete and have seen lots en lots of photos of fischeri's without staminode. Don't know what causes this. Could be that the plants that are around in cultivation originate from just a very few plants of which one had a genetic defect ?!
RZu.
Paphgirl September 24th, 2005, 09:04 AM Or could it be as with exstaminodium, and the fact that they self pollinate (which I did not know until just the other day)? Perhaps Robert-Jan will weigh in on this?
Mine's working on opening - but shipping has caused it a bit of trauma I'm afraid.
Hopefully it will hold on, and I think there is another behind it.
Paphgirl October 9th, 2005, 07:27 AM Well, the staminoid on mine is strange, but it isn't open enough to tell what is going on.
But at least it is finally opening. Color looks good. These photos are wretched, I'll try again under different light tonight.

TADD October 9th, 2005, 09:27 AM H, what light is that? Did the SO compromise? Can't wait to see your baby open!
Paphgirl October 9th, 2005, 10:26 AM Nah, they're just some crummy comfact CFLs (Is that redundant?)
I would say they aren't great, but they're something, and things are spiking and blooming so...
Paphgirl October 10th, 2005, 09:41 AM Okay, this is the best I could get today. Still opening. We're in for a week of clouds, so I don't know I'll be able to improve the lighting too much. The staminoid is just bizarre. I don't know what is going on with that!

couscous74 October 10th, 2005, 09:53 AM Looks good Heather :clap2:
Ron-NY October 10th, 2005, 10:08 AM looking good! Don't you have a flash on that camera?
Paphgirl October 10th, 2005, 10:14 AM looking good! Don't you have a flash on that camera?
Yes, that was taken w/ the flash on but covered w/ a business card. With the full flash on, it was too bright and overexposed. Without the flash, much blurrier.
likespaphs October 10th, 2005, 11:38 AM Without the flash, much blurrier.
if you can mount the camera on a tripod or other stand, without the flash should not be blurry
TADD October 10th, 2005, 11:48 AM Try waxed paper and a rubber band over the flash
