View Full Version : Silver bugs
leehericks March 24th, 2008, 10:21 PM This isn't on a paph, but in the sphagnum of another orchid. If I flood up the water, I see this skirmish of mini bugs in the water and I flipped over the pot and found a few more adult insects on the bottom. They look like they might have wings. Very small, silver in color. I sprayed a defacto insect killer into the pot before, but it didn't seem to kill the insects, only a "dango mushi" or rolly-pollie came out to die. Maybe it's an average harmless insect, I don't know. Do you know what this might be?

Paul B March 24th, 2008, 11:18 PM Those bugs look like sliver fish and they like moist damp conditions.
Slipperguy March 25th, 2008, 12:15 AM Yes they look a lot like silverfish to me also.
leehericks March 25th, 2008, 12:43 AM Ah...silverfish...hmm. I thought these had wings but I will search for them again. If that is the case, they are quite harmless, aren't they?
LatinLeo January 7th, 2009, 03:08 PM Hello, just wondering if you ever found out what those bugs were in your photo? Were you able to eradicate them? If so, how? Any info would be really appreciated. I found some on my plants a few days ago. I am thinking of using Peppermint soap and alchohol as pest control. I am new to orchids, only started growing them over a year ago, but am already addicted to them! Thank you, Leo
LatinLeo January 7th, 2009, 03:34 PM Hello, not sure if my last post posted. Did you ever find a solution for this problem of your regarding the supposed "silverfish"? It looks like I have the same insect on my pots and orchids. Were you able to eradiate them? If so, how?
I read on other threads that using peppermint soap and alcohol will kill them. Can anyone tell me if this method is safe for the plants? Any info would be appreciated, I am a newbie at growing orchids, a little over a year now.
Thanks,
Leo

Paphy57 January 8th, 2009, 07:30 PM Welcome to the site, Leo. :welcome:
It is OK for the plants to use rubbing alcohol and soap on them to remove pests. I have done this on many occasions.
