Howdy I am looking for any cultural tips on this unique littel phrag. Do you think it will grow under fluorescents? Just wondering? I might as my boss for a piece of one.

Yes, as long as you don't get a piece from Marilyn Ledoux! Her's are known to be gynormous....:D
Mine is about 14" in leafspan, but small, compact, it would grow under your lights I think, w/out a problem. You would want to be careful watering, not to get any water in the crown or water too much - they are prone to rot, but other than that....easy.

Mine is from Windy Hill parentage and it is dinky compared to my wallisii. It's doing well.

I grow it in the greenhouse next to the wallisii, where it gets fairly bright light for at least a few hours a day.

Its in a CHC based mix, and the pot sits in a saucer. After its watered there is some standing water in the saucer that holds it for a few days. So its semi/semi hydro.

I know it varies- Pete's from Windy Hill came through me and it is HUGE compared to the "usual" warsc. so I am only going by that, and mine from Al's. Mine has two new growths, so I'm hoping!

Rick - sounds nice!!!!

Thanks

It produced a real nice dark flower (only 1) when it was a bran new 2 growth plant. I actually got the plant from Orchid Babies a few years ago.

Its put on 3 or so growths in the last year, and acts like its thinking of blooming soon.

Mine grows under lights, and so far has stayed very small....just spiked recently, but only produced one bud, which dropped...probably because the plant was young, and things had warmed up........take care, Eric

bright light, keep on dry side, and check back 10 years later for blooms. some of these make roths look like a weed. as far as i'm concerned, large-foliaged warscewiczianum = caudatum at best, something mislabelled at worst.

Yeah thanks Gideon! My boss is trying to dissuade me from getting one saying I have all the space I need there at his place and personal greenhouses are very expensive to keep running. (I really think he is worried I won't have the time to spend at his place when I have my own :) )

He has talked about me taking over the business some day. Which would be kind of cool. I get there during the summers about 20-40 hours a week. During the school year oonly about 10-20 hours a week. I have a regular job teaching during the day, and I teach 2-3 nights a week at a alternative school. So my time gets real limited from August through June. I am definitely still learning so much about maintenance and control of a greenhouse let alone all the different cultural requirements for each genera of plants.

Also I have begun a major organizational project in each of the greenhouses. I think we are going to try and put all the bulbos in an alphabetical type order. Grouping all the A's together, B's, C'c, etc... I have grouped all the lycastes, paphs, phrags, phals (by type and pot size). Still we have tons of work to do.

Tadd that seems like a real ambitious project and difficult to do with so much plant material. I suppose you can house some of the things outside just temporay to make room to get them the way you want. I wouldn't have a clue how to run greenhouses like that you are getting some great experence some people actually pay to do what you are doing. I like lycaste's but I don't do so great with them I get some to bloom but not great don't know why. I'll bet he has some good ones too. I have a red one wild court it's slowly making it's way hope it dosen't crap out on me It's a great color only bloomed it once in Three years. almost lost it so it;s making a comeback. Sounds like Tom is letting you do what you want to and with his knowledge should be enjoyable. Ray

My 1000 Post!!!!! Here I come Paphgirl! :poke: Yeah right! Tom has pretty much given me free reign over the plants. We have moved about 400 plants outside under the shadecloth growing area. Didn't even make a dent in the shelves :) He really like the organization of the place. The problem it is such a mess, that it makes it very hard to even get started putting genera toger. He is constantly buying new plants. Customers will pick up plants carry them for awhile and put them down randomly. I will be in a hurry and place plants where they are supposed to go etc... I am just trying to make it a better run greenhouse with a cleaner product and more customer friendly atmosphere (not so overwhelming).

Tadd, sounds like you have a good deal going at Carolina Orchids.
Maybe you could rope off some space in the greenhouse for your private collection? And with the money you would save on the greenhouse, that roped off area would be even bigger... :D
And when you do take over the business someday, you could be the fairrie-king of the paph world...

I have a nice little small area of 3 trays of plants that I just don't need at home. I just got a montsrous division of a Coel. South Carolina it has 3 big bulbs and stands about 2 foot tall. Can't grow that at home! I have my specie phals there(3 or 4), and a few dendrobiums and some Burragearas. Stuff that I just dont need messing up my paphs :) I do have a Paph St. Swithin there, and a Phrag Richteri.
