Here's some pics of a mystery plant of mine. It was given to me as a gift under the name Govenia sp. After a long internet search, I came up with Liparis nervosa as the closest match, since it looks nothing like a Govenia and Malaxis flowers are held in the opposite direction(dorsal sepal down). If anyone knows this group of plants well...Please give me your two cents as I am still not 100% with it's current name. I am planning to preserve a couple flowers in alcohol and see about having it identified in the off chance it's a new species. Thanks in advance for any ideas.

couscous74 July 11th, 2005, 10:38 PM Jon, this is a really interesting looking plant. Did you ever find out what it was for sure?
Paphgirl July 11th, 2005, 10:42 PM Nice, also,
I like the sound of the name - reminds me of spells from Harry Potter!
Wingardium Leviosa! *poof*
New book Friday! :whoo:
Paphraguy July 11th, 2005, 10:52 PM Very nice. The leaves are very Cyp like.
Greenpaph July 11th, 2005, 10:58 PM Jon,
That is really neat! Quite healthy! Are the flowers a true purple and white? Do you give it the same culture as the paphs?
thanks
Jon in SW Ohio July 12th, 2005, 01:31 AM The lip is dark thick and purple. The petals and sepals are a transparent purple with a white column.
I grow it just like a paph, only it gets a semi dry winter rest when the leaves fall off and it goes dormant.

The flowers are very Liparis like, but there are more leaves (and more heavily pleated) on the plant than I am used to seeing on the handful of Liparis I'm familiar with. But checking it out on the orchid encyclopedia, it is called the "veined" liparis, and says it has 4 to 5 leaves. I think you got it.
Dr Larry MacGrath in OK is pretty good with the terrestrial species. I'll get you his email address.
Mahon July 24th, 2005, 02:32 AM Yes, this is indeed Liparis nervosa. I have had this species in a red form, and even heavier pleated leaves. The purple form I have never seen before, but color does not always matter in taxonomy and classification. Though color is an important factor, relatively close plants with different colored flowers may indicate a forma, or breed true in a variety.....
