View Full Version : Size of kovachii when it bloom!!
wonderlen March 14th, 2008, 04:31 PM What is the average size for blooming kovachii??? I'm thinking of buying a kovachii seedling (3-4" LS) and want to know if i should invest the time and money ($100) on the plant. Pictures from the net show the plant is at least twice the size of besseae and even bigger than my wallisii, that have a 24"LS when it flower.
Bill Zimmerman March 14th, 2008, 05:01 PM That seems to be the going price for Phrag kovachii seedlings of that size. I would guess that they will be blooming size at about 25 inches of leaf spread but would be mature at a bit larger. It all comes down to how well you can grow seedlings to maturity.
Paul B March 15th, 2008, 05:43 PM Does anyone know if Kovachii is a fast or slow grower?
smartie2000 March 15th, 2008, 07:07 PM slow grower. However mine is has a small leaf span as it was bought just deflasked (and perhaps I am not doing as good of a job as I should).
I think we are buying from the same vendor as there is only one that I know of in Canada. I think it is a good idea to buy a larger leafspan.

Hi Paul,
Compared to a slow growing species like caudatum, my kovachii is a fast grower. My kovachii x wallisii hybrid is even faster growing!
Ron-NY March 15th, 2008, 10:20 PM The blooming size ones that I saw in Lima, at Alfredo Manrique's, were under 18"

That is a big one! What media is he using? It seems like dolomite and charcoal.

I to am interested in the type of media used. It certainly looks dry in the photo. I thought that mosts Ph.rags prfeferred moist medium.

Roy March 31st, 2008, 10:33 AM I'm interested in the mix also but as for the pic, there is a gauge stuck into the mix, is that for temp or moisture level ????
budsbud March 31st, 2008, 11:06 AM LOL...it took me some time to find that gauge you were talking about!
orchidlover March 31st, 2008, 04:18 PM That is a gorgeous clump of kovachii Phrags!
Ron-NY March 31st, 2008, 11:09 PM I believe it was river rock, charcoal and bark. The gauge was for temp.
I have recently spoken with Alfredo and he has succeeded this year to get them to bud in Lima's summer. His plants are just starting to bloom.
skipper February 1st, 2009, 08:16 PM Very beautiful Kovachii plants just amazing.
dragonfly22 February 1st, 2009, 11:27 PM Beautiful plants! Have they bloomed?
Tom S February 2nd, 2009, 02:13 PM Beautiful phrag plants and they look so well taken care of!
Thanks for sharing!
Paphy57 February 2nd, 2009, 04:29 PM Those plants in the pictures have bloomed. They are the source of almost all the kovachii seedlings in the US, and maybe even the world.
dragonfly22 February 2nd, 2009, 05:57 PM Thanks! After posting my reply I realized this thread was posted over a year ago so I'm sure they must have bloomed already.
Ron-NY February 3rd, 2009, 06:19 PM Alfredo has told me that all of his mother plants have been divided and the divisions have bloomed. He has made a bunch of new PK crosses
JPMC February 3rd, 2009, 07:30 PM I have two kovachii seedlings: one that was well-established from OL and another in trade from someone who just de-flasked some seedlings. For me, they are the only phrags that grow at all. In fact they double in width every 6-9 months. I grow in clay pots and the medium id 50/50 perlite and supersphag. I give calcium supplements every 4 months.
Ron-NY February 5th, 2009, 06:37 PM I have a few PK crosses and a couple are now blooming size and a couple are still with only 5" leaf spans. I am hoping to see spikes soon on the large ones. My PK is fairly new and was just moved to S/H culture this morning.
Paphraguy February 6th, 2009, 03:41 PM My Phrag kovachii x wallisii now has a new growth so I'm hoping to see a spike soon! :fcrossed:
fred February 10th, 2009, 01:05 PM Mine has a good size spike going and two small new growths. The first spike blasted off so this is the second spike for this plant it's the only one I have.I bought it from Glen it's Susanne I'm waiting to post a picture.
