kellyincville March 13th, 2008, 05:06 PM I'll try to get a couple of pictures tonight of my flasks as they also arrived yesterday. I was a little worn out after all the potting since I didn't start until I got home from work at 8 and since there were 7 flasks to do...
The roths look great!
Justin March 13th, 2008, 05:36 PM Mine are doing great...this time around i am keeping them a little on the dry side and they are doing great...my last flask i watered too much and lost so many to rot.
rdlsreno March 16th, 2008, 02:03 AM Cool!

wolverine329 May 13th, 2009, 06:06 AM they all look nice and healthy
Bob in Albany, N.Y. May 13th, 2009, 09:45 AM Glad you got those roth. seedlings. I personally love roths., but I'm starting to wonder about the flood in the market of roth. flasks. It almost seems like it will take the whole state of Florida and Hawaii just to grow them all out. If even half of these seedlings make it to flowering size, what will it due to the market? Even though I love them, I personally can only handel a handfull of roths. even if they are quality roths.
Anyone else have the same thought as me, or is it just me being a worry wart?
orchidlover May 13th, 2009, 10:33 AM Those seedlings must have grown larger by now.

I feel some what the same way as you so you're not alone. :D They used to be so expensive but now they are so common and that actually helps bring the prices down, more affordable and available like the lowii species.
Tom S May 13th, 2009, 10:38 AM Great looking plants!
Thanks for sharing!
skipper May 13th, 2009, 11:29 AM Very nice looking seedlings.
newgrower May 13th, 2009, 12:49 PM can we see some pictures of how th plants look now?
Does anyone know if anyone sends flasks to europe?? :)
Justin May 13th, 2009, 04:34 PM Ken,
Below is a picture of how the biggest ones look 12 months out of flask. Not bad I must say :) The new crosses are all so vigorous!
Bob, in reply to your post, roth prices are already coming down in the pot plant market, while flower quality and vigor/speed of growth are increasing.
That is just for the pot plant market. I think the prices for selected roth clones will only keep going up.
One thing I notice though, is that small seedlings are being sold at the price of adult plants just on the name of the parents. And only 1 or 2 out of 100 seedlings will be special plants. That is why flasks are the way to go if you have the space and time to grow them out.
My strategy is to grow out flasks but also to buy the occasional selected clone when i have a spare couple thousand dollars, which is not all that often to be honest. I have grown about 7 roth flasks so far, but they are still at the manageable seedling stage... I have about 2 more years until they blow up on me at which point I will either have to either build a heated greenhouse or dedicate a whole bedroom for an indoor roth grow under metal halide/hps lamps.
That being said, I skipped buying flasks this spring because I am already pretty maxed out on seedlings, but I am looking forward to seeing Sam's next flask list in the fall! It is anticipation of next year's division list that really has me worried though.
2ljd May 13th, 2009, 05:48 PM Justin,
Feeding off of Bob's earlier comment...you can send your overstock roths to me here in Hawaii and I can grow them out for you. ;)
Nice looking seedlings by the way...my seedlings are about the same age and size too.
Paul B May 13th, 2009, 06:22 PM wow they look very nice!!!
Justin May 13th, 2009, 06:42 PM Joe,
I am constantly amazed by how well roths can grow here in the north even with the cold winter. I offset the cool temps half the year with artificial light, pure water, and lots of fertilizer (more in the summer of course), and i run humidifiers in the winter as well. Central Ohio is naturally humid, which is one benefit.
For some reason roths seem to like the "rest" of the cool season. They do keep growing through the winter under artificial light, but they just explode with growth in the summer. I imagine they grow like crazy where you live.
Paphy57 May 13th, 2009, 07:54 PM Those seedlings are looking nice!
Paphraguy May 13th, 2009, 08:44 PM Nice healthy looking seedlings! Good job!

sorry for the misspelled name. - j.
nick/peter/everyone, thanks for the nice comments.
Bob in Albany, N.Y. May 13th, 2009, 09:28 PM Don't get me wrong, I love the new roth. breeding and also want to own many of these new seedlings. That said, I can't grow a small seedling if my life depended on it. I'm still hoping a few of you nice folks throw a few of those seedling my way once they are nice and chunky. If I bought the 3 or 4 inch seedling it would be sentencing it to death at my house :-)
newgrower May 14th, 2009, 12:51 AM Hehe, when they come to blooming size, you are going to have the house full of roths... :)
But the seedlings look nice!
Slipperguy May 14th, 2009, 01:04 AM Wow..awesome plants!

Hi Justin,
I feel fortunate that I don't have to deal with providing light, humidity, etc. otherwise my plants would probably die from neglect. Seriously though, I probably spend too much time outside caring for my orchids (just ask my wife). All of my paphs do well year round, but seem to explode right about now and on through the summer.

Here's a recent photo of some of my Paph seedlings. There are a bunch of roths, stonei and the bigger ones are gigantifolium. They're already sending out new leaves like crazy.
Justin May 14th, 2009, 06:15 PM Joie.
those are beautiful seedlings. they are extremely healthy looking. I bet you could get them to bloom in not too many years.

2ljd May 15th, 2009, 02:16 AM Thanks guys!
Justin, you must have a ton of seedlings too I'll bet!
Justin May 15th, 2009, 07:57 AM Yep I've got over 200 or 250 seedlings in addition to my adult plants. what other plants do you grow?

Hi Justin,
Besides the seedlings, I've got several adult paphs...roths, stoneis, sanderianums, adductums, a few primary hybrids, various phrags, species phals, and vanilla. Most of my paphs and phrags are single growth plants, so I'm a bit afraid of what will happen (in terms of space) when they all have multiple growths.
Justin May 15th, 2009, 06:26 PM excellent!
roth, stonei, sand, all grow fast for me...but adductum is by far my slowest growing species. I have about 17 or 18 of them from a flask i grew 2-3 years ago, and they are sloooooow. adductum var. anitum is slow too.
2ljd May 16th, 2009, 01:58 AM excellent!

I've noticed that too with my adductum, but I guess it teaches us patience if nothing else. Mine are growing new leaves and growing in size ever so slowly, so I must be doing something right. :fcrossed:
Justin May 16th, 2009, 09:21 AM As Sam Tsui told me, if you can even keep adductum alive out of flask it is an accomplishment :)
Mine are growing too, just at their own pace.
2ljd May 17th, 2009, 02:17 AM I'd love to see some photos when you have the time!
