View Full Version : Carolina Orchids Bulbo section.
TADD July 5th, 2005, 08:33 PM As most of you know, I volunteer at Carolina Orchids. I figured I would take a few photos, and show you where I work, and with what plants I get to work with. This is not an advertisement, and if it is uneccessary please moderators remove it. Thanks!

couscous74 July 5th, 2005, 08:37 PM Very nice Tadd! I like # 1,2, and 4.
Is #1 just one flower? or a bunch growing circular on an inflorescence?
What IS the last one?

TADD July 5th, 2005, 08:44 PM Couscous, the 1st one is a few flowers growing in a circle. The last one is bulb. orhtosepalum, it has a leaf span of roughly 4 feet. Fred wanted to buy that one when he was here.
Park Bear July 5th, 2005, 09:24 PM yes, I take one of each...I'm really starting to like bulbo's
couscous74 July 5th, 2005, 09:31 PM Whoa! Slow it down man... Each one of those could be it's own thread :D
Ok, in the second one - Catts - I think it's # 9, I lost count. What's the one that looks like some sort of white conch meat with purple spot or maybe a space alien? Is it upside down?
TADD July 5th, 2005, 11:12 PM hhaahhhaahhhaaa Marcus, that is a Stanhopea. I will have to look at the hybrid, but each one of those flowers is bigger than my open hand. Yes they are upside down. They grow out the bottom of a wire basket. They are one of my favorite, however I need a greenhouse to really grow them well. The do look kind of like conch meat!
I thought about making each one a thread, but didn't want to so blatantly spam!
RickL July 5th, 2005, 11:21 PM 8) 8) 8) :-dance:  8)
I could get addicted to Stanophea's if their flowers lasted longer than a couple of days.
TADD July 5th, 2005, 11:27 PM But you get alot of buds throughout the year with them, and they smell great. We have one that smells like York Peppermint Patties it is awesome!
Greenpaph July 5th, 2005, 11:37 PM Tadd,
Super pictures! Seems like a wonderful place to work!
Thanks for sharing!
fred July 6th, 2005, 12:01 AM Super job Tadd makes me wantr to get back down there. That Stanhopea must be the one that wasn't open yet when I was there but was as big as my closed fist and I have a large hand. The Bulbo Phal. looks like it's growing nicely. My wife still reminds me that I made her smell an Echolabianum in bloom and how bad it was . she should be happy I didn't get to buy the Bulbo Phal. If I remember right I tried to,buy the tenebrosa also. You take some nice shots One could really spend days looking over all that is there to see. Ray
TADD July 6th, 2005, 12:07 AM That is kind of the problem, you are so overwhelmed in there, you often miss alot. Like the digbyana (catt) hybrid was growing down through table and blooming under neath it. If you notice in that photo, it is in the trashcan. It wasn't growing well enough for Tom so he pitched it. I can't grow it under my lights.
Ernie July 6th, 2005, 02:01 AM Oh Geez, send your trashcanned items to me, I'll pay the postage!!!
paphjoint July 6th, 2005, 02:20 AM Great shots Tadd,
Is the orthosepalum for sale?
I've bee searching for this specie for ages it's the last species I'm missing in the macrobulbon section
TADD July 6th, 2005, 08:16 AM Yeah I am sure he would sell, but the price wouldn't be worth it. I can't remember if he told Fred a price or not. I think this might be his only orthospealum. I will have to look around. He has a bunch of fletcherianums I know, and a few phaleanopsis of roughy 4 to 5 feet. I will look around. I think this particular plant has an award. I will look at it today.
paphjoint July 6th, 2005, 09:06 AM Tadd,
I found that the Orthosepalum is on their sales list for 150$ I would like to get one in, tell me if the ship to France or not
TADD July 6th, 2005, 09:42 AM No I don't think export sorry. They don't have the proper paperwork as far as I know. I will ask.
Picsri July 6th, 2005, 10:40 AM very nice .. wow.. I like the bulbo that you post so much. wow...
Gideon July 6th, 2005, 05:56 PM Hey TADD, very nice man, you are really lucky to get to see and work with such a large range of orchids.
Now, about those trash can specials...there will be plenty of space in your new greenhouse...
TADD July 6th, 2005, 06:26 PM Yeah it used to bother the heck out of me. Last summer he lost some really expensive Catts to rot, and fungas. He just tossed them. I was in shock. He said that those plants were easily $300-400 ones. I always look in the cans, but realize that what's in there needs to stay in there because of bugs or virus, rot, etc... He has thousands of plants, so a few here and there in the trash are no big deal. (I guess)
Paphgirl July 6th, 2005, 07:00 PM Oh la! I missed the whole middle of this post last night. I just almost choked on an olive pit reading about the stans!
I didn't realize they were fragrant. Way cool, remind me of hummingbirds, but alas, no, not be growing them here! :(
Gideon July 8th, 2005, 02:16 AM TADD, I hope you show us photos of the Bulb. orthosepalum when it opens. That is a very interesting plant.
TADD July 8th, 2005, 07:38 AM I will definitely post anew phot soon in the orchid gallery. One of the flowers has opened almost all the way.
Gideon July 8th, 2005, 11:29 AM Thanks, looking forward to it.
dustyatticstuff July 8th, 2005, 10:35 PM WOW! That is an incredible amount of plants!!! I could imagine going into that G/H, getting lost, and never coming out. There is so much to see.
Now what is the plant in the second photo of the first batch of photos you posted??? It looks Paph-like with feet??? Really cool. (With my luck, it is probably one of those that smells really bad)
TADD July 9th, 2005, 12:57 PM If I remember correctly that is bubl. dearii. I think it smells like decaying citrus. :) Not too bad!
dustyatticstuff July 9th, 2005, 02:32 PM EEEWWWWW! Thanks Tadd. At least it does not smell like dead fish. :)
It IS very pretty!!
likespaphs July 9th, 2005, 02:40 PM my favorite part about stanhopeas, well, two things actually...
first is that they were initially grown in clay pots, but they never bloomed
someone accidentally knocked a pot down, broke it and they discovered an inflorescence off the bottom
the second is that some stanhopea flowers develop so quickly that they open with an audible pop
TADD July 9th, 2005, 04:29 PM Wow I didn't know that about the "pop" I will have to listen for them, we probably only have a 100 or so in baskets.
Paphgirl July 17th, 2005, 06:21 AM Tadd - only one of your photos is still showing - is something up that you can identify and fix? thanks!!
TADD July 17th, 2005, 07:35 AM I can't go back in and edit the previous posts, but here are the pics, they are not back in the order they were once in, sorry you can shoot me for that. Sorry for the inconvenience!

Paphraguy July 17th, 2005, 10:22 AM Very nice photos and plants, thanks for posting! :clap2:
couscous74 July 17th, 2005, 10:34 AM TADD, did you add a couple of different ones? I don't remember seeing some of these last time.
TADD July 17th, 2005, 10:45 AM I don't think I did maybe the maxillaria that looks likea sucker fish? I think most of them were grouped together into genus. So it might be because of that? Sorry!
Picsri July 17th, 2005, 10:54 AM wow, all are very nice... thank you Tadd.
