View Full Version : unintentional specimen plant
Ron-NY February 24th, 2008, 08:09 PM Phrag Patti MacHale is a primary cross of (pearcei x sargentianum). I had wanted to divide it but this is such a long blooming plant. The last flower fell at the end of Nov 2007...I got busy with the holidays and by mid January it was again in spike. I discovered spike #5 today  Hoping for one more, if I get #6, I may get it judged. It is a not very common primary hybrid with relatively compact, stiff, broad leaves and sequentially blooming for 8 months of the year. I would love to cross this with kovachii to get larger flowers with longer blooming time and incresed bud count but will have to wait some time to do this. I tried a kovachii hybrid on it last year but it didn't take. What would you cross this with? besseae?? walisii?? kovachii??
Here is a pic of a previous flowering.

Ron-NY February 24th, 2008, 09:29 PM Hi,
Any idea where to buy a nice size one ?

I rarely see this in catalogs. This was a gift from a friend. He bought it from a Canadian vendor, at the Montreal show back in 2002 I believe. You can try googling...but as I said it is rarely seen
Brian Monk February 24th, 2008, 10:08 PM I vote a cross with schlimii. Both Carol Kanzer (schlimii X pearcei) and Coral Jewel (schlimii X sargentianum) are awarded. More importantly, the size of the plant is further compacted, and you get a significant increase in the number of those pretty pink flowers!
Ron-NY February 24th, 2008, 10:19 PM great suggestion, Brian!!! I do have access to some nice schlimii pollen. The plant is large and strong enough to carry at least one pod per spike. I can consider others as well.
Brabantia February 25th, 2008, 04:16 PM Very nice plant. Don't forget to inform me when you have seedlings because I am interested.
Ron-NY February 25th, 2008, 05:35 PM will do when they are ready
Tom499 February 26th, 2008, 12:14 PM A beautiful flower! I look forward to seeing your new cross :D
Brabantia February 26th, 2008, 03:07 PM will do when they are ready
Many thanks in advance.
Ron-NY February 26th, 2008, 05:30 PM well Alfredo Manrique will be taking pollen from this plant to cross with kovachii. He is also going to remake Patti MacHale as well.
