View Full Version : WOC Miami - II
fairorchids January 23rd, 2008, 11:54 PM A few bits & pieces from Miami. The exhibits range from FANTASTIC (Krull-Smith) to worse than sub-standard (won't name the perpetrators here). The K-S exhibit was like two islands, connected by a bridge. A photo of the center portion follows below.
The vendors area has something for everyone - and then some. I think I have busted my orchid budget for the next 3 years already. So far I have purchased this much in Paphs (plus a bunch of Rhynchostylis and intergeneric Vandaceous hybrids):
From Orchid Inn
1 x Sorceror's Stone
1 x barbatum
From Krull-Smith
1 x leucochilum (Krulls Perfection x Krull's Round Robin), NBS
1 x Krull's Magic Rose (Psyche x Macabre), see photo below
1 x (Triple Trix 'Crystelle' x [James Bacon x Double Trix] 'Crystelle'), flask
1 x (fairrieanum "Jim Krull' x POonkan'[s Eboyn 'Krull's Ruby'), flask
Sun Moon Orchids, Taiwan
1 x (fairrieanum 'Red' x self), flask
1 x (emersonii 'Big' x self), flask
In-Charm, Taiwan
1 x (leucochilum x sib), flask
Ooi Leng Sun Orchids, Malaysia
2 x barbatum 'giganteum' (possibly a new species?)
1 x concolor 'striatum'
2 x niveum
Floralia Orquideas, Brazil
1 x (Sparsholt x Winston Churchill 'Indom.'), flask
Amongst the Vandaceous, I purchased 10 seedlings of Ascda. Fat Tuesday from RF Orchids on Tuesday morning. When we got to the WOC on Tuesday evening, we saw a bunch of these in the RFO exhibit, including one that won best in show. Photo of the best one follows below.
Between Krull-Smith, Piping Rock, Marriott and Orchideen Duerbusch from Germany, not to mention the Taiwanese, Malays, etc., there are plenty of Paphs. Including one vendor offering illegal flasks (such as 3 different hangianum selfings in flasks!). I was sorely tempted, but in the end I decided not to run the risk.
Here are a few photos

Brian Monk January 25th, 2008, 09:41 PM Hi from the WOC!! I've been here volunteering, taking photos, judging, and generally milling around since Monday. Tomorrow will be the last day I attend. I am not going to Tamiami, I'm out of time and money. Hopefully, I'll see some of you before the end of the show. Greetings to all I met, and thanks for the memories. Here is a list of what I bought:

Justin January 25th, 2008, 10:40 PM Awesome...please remember to tell us more about the raven story when you get back!
Rocketman January 25th, 2008, 11:48 PM I was also at the WOC, just got back and repotted my purchases. I took many pictures but haven't had the time to see if I have any really good shots and shots that would be different from others posted so far.
Pictures can not capture how impressive the Krull-Smith display really is, unfortunately for those that can't make the WOC.
Many people have posted about hangianum, there was more than just illegal hangianum. I have to look at the list of illegal paph's to be sure, but I think there were at least 3 or 4? More to follow on that subject I'm sure.
Good night for now, I need some sleep.

Oh that's cruel! Now I wanna know too.
I try to look at people's name tags to see if there is anyone I know, but honestly I havent seen anyone yet, except Albany, NY Bob (can spot you a mile away :p), but I was in the middle of a conversation and didnt have a chance to steal away to say hello.
But there are about, oh, five to ten people there under 30. I'm one of them, and Ill be at all the paph lectures tomorrow, maybe stealing away for the Fred Clarke one cause I have been to the Alfredo Manrique one back in April, (and if they havent changed been to the Hadley Cash and Norito Hasegawa one as wel from early in '07). At any rate, short dark hair, with glasses...grab me and say hello!
scooby5757 January 26th, 2008, 12:08 AM BTW, I went to the Tamiami this morning. Was in at 10 and out at 1040. The show was a bit lack-luster. There really was no "show" about 50x more orchids in the vendors area. I hate to be critical, and applaud any effort but it sucked to pay (even 7 bucks) to get in and find no exhibits, just an island of palms with some orchids scattered about in it. I did like the little black leaf begonia that was similar to one I had, but bigger leaves.
I did get a nice vini with a super nice wide flat dorsal and a paph. Angela that had great shape and second bud coming up on the same spike. I thought that seemed pretty out of the ordinary, am I right?
Rusty January 26th, 2008, 08:55 AM Ty, I drove down from Hobe Sound a few years ago for the Tamiami show. It took a couple of hours to get there. The show was a total waste of time and $. I think I was there less than a half hour. Rusty

It was not a show, more like an 'orchid fest'. There wasn't much for Paph people (a few In-Charm hybrids, some Leeanum & Lathaminianum, etc.). However, for those with interest in other genera there were some goodies. I found:
Vanda javiera (white species from Philippines), which I have been after for more than 3 years.
Gramatophyllum scriptum x Cymbidium ensifolium, a warm growing intergeneric, which can bloom twice a year.
+ a couple of other Vandeceous plants to add to my evergrowing collection.
Cal-Orchids was there with some very good Cattleya loddigesii (and displaying one that got an AM (83 or 84 points), but deserved an FCC.

I have just heard that Sunday afternoon Fish & Wildlife were overruled, so all 'illegal' flasks & plants were released for sale. Apparently someone snapped up all the hangianums, so whoever it was will try to corner the market for the next few years. On the other hand, perhaps this will lead to more coming in (I hope).
