When I bid on this, I thought that I would be getting a Blooming Size plant. I had no clue from the photo on the listing that it would be a specimen. I counted over 20 growths, and then gave up. It fills up the kitchen sink!!!

This is a hybrid called Phrag Rosea. The seller was nice enough to send me a photo of the bloom. I cannot wait until I get a spike!!!!!

I want to repot it, but I'm aftaid to as I don't want it to fall apart, as I'd like to leave it large. Any ideas????

Thanks!!

That is one huge plant! At 20+ growth, I think it would be best to divide it into 2 clumps or repot it without dividing it if you want a huge specimen sized plant. It should be spectacular when it spikes.

Susan - do you know who the parents are? I cannot find Phrag. Rosea listed on Phragweb. Maybe I'll go check RHS....but if you knew.....:)

Looks like there is some Cardinale in there, and something w/ big leaves (*cough*longifolium??) Purty, and gynormous!!

Heather, I googled this Hybrid for hours & hours and could not come up with any info. Still, I put a bid on it anyway, as it was very reasonable and I don't mind taking chances if the price is right. I can go and email the seller and ask what the cross is. They have another one listed on Ebay. It looks just as big. Also I wanted to let him/her know that it arrived safely, nicely packed, and that it is a huge, very healthy plant!!! I was just amazed at the size of this plant when I pulled it out of the box. I do now understand why these could be potted in barrels or washtubs. I mean, it fills my sink!

I think I will repot it. i DO want to get to the roots and think it might do well in a hanging pot, with all that downward leaf growth. I'll wait until the fundraising post comes in & a consensus is reached. I can always repot and donate a division for the cause!!!

Talk about finding growing space.:lol: (I do love these rolling heads!)

I don't know what it is - I can't find Rosea anywhere.
It is a nice specimen - and your sink is lovely! (I keep typing in roll instead of LOL because of the rolling action, haha!) Anyway, nice phrag!

Could it be Rosey Gem? Rosey Gem is Cardinale x Sedenii, so it does make sense for its large size and the flowers do look very Cardinale/Sedenii.

Thanks Pete, This is good information.

I will mention that when I email the seller. The leaf span of the growths is about 32" for the largest growth I could find in that Phrag jungle!!!!

Guess if I decide to grow indoors this Winter, I will need the 4' x 8' 3/4" plywood to augment my table!!!!!

I just cannot believe the size of this!!!

No big secret about being an ebay goddess.':Shh: The best deals are found during what I call the "off hours." That means during working times, when we have to do other things....like work. When I sell, I make it a point to have my auctions end in the evening, so more potential bidders can watch. When I buy, I make it a point to track the auctions that end at unlikely times. One example would be on a Sunday afternoon. A Monday morning would also work. Just find the times where other bidders are too busy to track the items!!!

Well. I heard from the seller. He said that he did find out the parents on Wildcatt, but he forgot and no longer has the database. So, it is a mystery.

He also said that the other one he has listed on Ebay is almost as large. So, if anyone is looking for a big, big, plant, check it out!!

I can't find it in wildcatt... Or anything reasonably close. I've seen a plant going around with variations on this name. I'm pretty sure Hausermanns was selling it at one point. I know there are a few clones in the MSU collection. I've never seen a small one either. I think its prime attribute is weedyness.

There is a Phrag. Calurum "Rosea" that has been around forever. This is probably the actual name.

I came up with Phrag.Calurum x Phrag. Sedenii most likely that is what it is. I don't know how you could ever be certain though. How's your Roth doing? Ray

Hi Ray,

I will take a photo of it when it blooms. Thank you for your ideas. When I bought it, I had no clue, but I am impulsive and fast with the mouse. I also keep a limit to how much I want to spend. (which is good) '

As for the Roth, the bloom shrivelled up this week and I cut the spike down last night. I did see a tiny new growth coming on, which made me very happy.

I think Summer is a great time to repot & check roots. Yes? I think I want to be doing that.

What about your Roth?

Hi Susan, My Roth is still holding on to it's one bloom. At least now I know why a spike full of thier blooms looks so good. Ray

Susan,

Just a follow-up to the second plant offered after your first amazing one...

The price jumped from $17 to $43 in the last day or so of bidding and I highly suspect it was from promoting it here. That high a price for a NOID phrag without a picture of previous bloom is a bit strange on the eBay market. :poke:

Well you know it wasn't me that's for sure. Where would I put that beast?

I felt I stole mine at $27+. I'm glad for the seller that the second one went for more. (It averages out!)

And Tadd, I think I might be giving up the idea of a greenhouse, at least for this year. So it will have to go in the space I'm planning with HSD lighting. (I'll have to pry it in somehow...)

Thank You, Billie! I think I will leave it as a speciman size plant. Perhaps I will get lucky and it will put out several spikes at once. That would be nice!!!!

Best,
Susan
