Hi y'all!
I recently put China Moon (Greyi x armeniacum) pollen onto Nimit (Greyi x primulinum). It did not take.
I am forced to wonder if I should have seen this coming? I know that as Paph hybrids become more complex, they are notorious for their low fertility. And I know that Parvisepalums can produce crippled offspring and can be difficult to breed with. And I know that whites also tend to low fertility. What I don't know is whether there was any inherent incompatability in this cross that would preclude me from trying again next bloom.
Any ideas?

I don't have the answer but quite intriguing! I await a response.

You ask a difficult question, and many parents need to be experimented with to determine an educated answer. I suggest that you try crosses with both plants as pod and pollen parents to see if you can obtain seed. Perhaps one operates better as a pod parent than the other, or there are some fertility problem.
Many crosses work with different success rates on different attempts. Perhaps it is cultural or genetic, but as long is genetic compatibility there should be a chance for seed. Also, different parents of the same grex perform differently and the amount of seed can vary greatly.

Bill -
Thanks for taking a shot. No new info, really, but just what I was thinking -
IF AT FIRST YOU DON'T SUCCEED, TRY, TRY AGAIN.

I have tried a number of crosses over the last 3 years. It seems to me that once you start mixing several groups, (brachy, parvi, barbatum, etc.), it is less likely to take. I tried Nimit (primulinum x Greyi) with (Sierra Lace x fairrieanum) this past spring, and it did not take.
On the other hand, I am also dabbling in miniature Vandaceous. A year ago I tried (Vasco Fuchsia Von Krone x Neostylis Lou Sneary), but it did not take. This year I tried the reverse, and after 4 weeks it appears that the pod is developing. Perhaps the Vasco doesn't work as a pod parent, and perhaps it is that Lou Sneary is a more willing pod parent. Anyway, I would try the Nimit again, if possible the other way around.
I like the potential of Nimit (I had a total of 4 flowers on the spike in the 2nd blooming), so try again - and perhaps the other way around.
