View Full Version : My orchid house and some of my plants
bhams November 28th, 2007, 07:22 AM after many months of moving here - my plants are finally starting to recover -thought you all might like to see my growing area - it was a wood storage area at the end of one of our sheds -my husband put some windows on the front door area and closed it in for me -the weather here in winter goes to - 4C -and in summer it can get to 44C- my phrags didnt do too good over winter but are picking up now .I read the fourm but don't get to any meetings anymore - just too far - 300 odd kms - so its just me and my plants these days . As i live in western australia its even now hard to source plants from the eastern states as our state laws are out of wack . - hope you enjoy my pics --
Billie

goldenrose November 28th, 2007, 09:00 AM Where there's a will, there's a way! They are looking REAL good! I take it, you moved from another part of Australia, where was that? What is the size of your growing area?
orchidlover November 28th, 2007, 10:02 AM You have beautiful plants!
bhams November 28th, 2007, 05:35 PM Fremantle - right on the coast - to 400kms inland and south east - we live outside a little town called Wagin . Its nice here just my plants went from glasshouse to nothing - its much colder and the plants even with a heater suffered - so much . now its summer the phrags are doing so much better . at one stage i thought i'd have to give them up - thanks for looking Billie
Justin November 28th, 2007, 07:22 PM Looks like they are perking up. you have a nice little oasis inside there. glad the plants made it. it is amazing how seasonal change can actually be good for what we think of as tropical orchids. i am sure by next winter you will have the experience to minimize the shock a little more.
Tom Velardi November 28th, 2007, 07:25 PM Hey Billie,
Nice set up you've got there. 4 C is too cold for most slippers - how warm do you manage to keep the growing area when temperatures bottom out like that? I too grow mine on the cool side, but not quite that cold, usually not below 8 C.
Don't give up! Your plants look really healthy.
Paphy57 November 28th, 2007, 07:25 PM Very Nice Phrags!!!

bhams November 29th, 2007, 12:14 AM was hard this past winter - i did lose some phrags -even big ones -the paphs weren't quite as bad although i do have some with what i call cold burn - i'll post a pic later they were mainly roth primary's and exul . i brought the heating gear from my glasshouse - it was just a bit old and brittle to move . ihave a thermostat which hooks into mains box which my heater is pluged into -and it was set to come on when temp. reached 10C (won't talk about the power bill) -- -next winter i've started looking into solar panels - here caravans traveling in the outback - use them for power - farmers around us use them to pump water to the house from the tanks- I think one could use them for heating and cooling - this is my current project once set up it should be O K I think - anyone there use solar energy for their plants ?
again thanks all for you interest
Billie
Paphraguy November 29th, 2007, 02:22 PM Nice collection of plants!
PaulS November 29th, 2007, 07:58 PM Your plants look terrific, Billie. I love WA, spent a year there until I had to leave and come to NZ. One season picking fruit in Donnybrook was probably enough for my old bones, anyway. It goes down to 0C here a couple of times a year and my phrags don't seem to suffer too much. I have them on a heat pad now, without which I was getting some damage. Have you costed a solar system?
hjohn November 29th, 2007, 08:59 PM They diffenately look like they are perking up nicely.
