View Full Version : FS- kovachii, sanderianum, roth, PEOY, brachys, Vandas and more!
elpaninaro November 11th, 2007, 05:52 PM Good evening everyone! Following is a great selection of plants I am offering for sale to make space for compots ready to be potted out and also for future flasks to be used for future Chronicles threads on dealing with Paph and Phrag species in the home environment in an easy and economical way.
I would like to thank Peter for allowing me to offer these plants here and also for providing this most outstanding forum in which much knowledge is shared. To that end, 20% of all your purchases will be donated to SOF to help with the many costs involved in maintaining a site of this quality.
And now the fine print- US delivery only. I apologize for this, but I am not equipped to deal with all the forms appropriate for international delivery, and I am definitely not able to ship the kovachii outside of the US. Shipping will be $6.00 for 1-10 Paphs bare-root and $8.00 for 11+ Paphs bare-root. Shipping for Paphs/Phrags in pot will be $6.00 for the first plant/compot and $1.00 for each additional plant/compot with a maximum charge of $20.00. Expedited delivery to areas already getting very cold at night can be arranged- PM me and we can work out the best method. Shipping for Vandas will be $10.00 for the first plant and $2.00 for each additional plant. For the safety of the plants, I prefer to not package Vandas with Paphs. Paypal is fine, and checks or money orders are okay too.
I had meant to do this a month ago, so I know it is getting cold now. As need arises, I will find and source some heat packs at no charge to you. That will take a few days, but when ordering, let me know the weather in your area so I know how many to get.
All photos are of the actual plants you are being offered! NOTE- the forum does not allow editing of posts past a certain time. So please check the most recent offering summary posts at the end of this thread to see my latest update posts of what is sold and what is still available. I will make updates as often as twice daily- if needed.
Final note- apologies for this, but I do not have a label maker, nor do I have the time to fill out full tags for the seedling Paphs. It would take many hours for me to do them all. The Paphs have tags with the original vendor cross numbers and I will make sure to print you that list when I send them. Apologies again for doing this to you, but I hope I have accounted for this in part with some competitive pricing.
Discounts- no discounts on the kovachii, but 10% off anything else with a total order of $300 or more. This means you can use the kovachii to get to $300 to get a break on other stuff. For example, spend $200 on kovachii and $100 on other stuff, and you will get 10%- or $10- off the other stuff since your order totaled $300 or more.
ALL ORDERS $150 OR MORE COME WITH A FREE PIECE OF LAELIA RUBESCENS OFF A MASSIVE SPECIMEN PLANT I JUST GOT AT A LOCAL ORCHID SOCIETY AUCTION.

But enough fine print- here come the goodies...
elpaninaro November 11th, 2007, 06:04 PM http://img404.imageshack.us/img404/8915/xbellmt8.jpg (http://imageshack.us)
31 plants of Paph. bellatulum ('Huge Bold Spots' x 'Red Spots')- this is a sibling cross from Orchid Inn aiming for really intense blotchy red spots. Plants are 4-5+ cm with nice fat post-flask leaves. $10 per plant or 6 plants for $50.
http://img218.imageshack.us/img218/6981/xmallu4.jpg (http://imageshack.us)
4 plants and 4 compots of Paph. malipoense (‘Twin Towers’ x ‘New Dimension’)- this is a sibling cross from Orchid Inn aiming for tall stems and large flower size. Individual plants pictures are 5+ cm and $10 each. The 3 compots of larger seedlings are $35.00 each and the compot with the small seedlings is $20.00. Compots are in 4” azalea pots for size reference.
http://img441.imageshack.us/img441/97/xnivpl4.jpg (http://imageshack.us)
On the left- 5 plants of Paph. niveum ('Jumbo Snow Ball' x 'Perfect Circle') with a 5+ cm leaf span each. A stunning sib cross from Orchid Inn aiming for top size and form. $20.00 per plant.
On the right- 2 compots of Paph. leucochilum 'Florida Red' HCC/AOS x (Bella Lucia x Sabatino) 'Red Moon'. This is a new brachy cross from Orchid Inn aiming for flowers with very intense red coloration. Time will tell, but for now things look promising as the foliage on these is already coming out very consistently pigmented. 15 plants per compot and about ready for single pots. $60.00 per compot- just $4.00 per plant.
http://img131.imageshack.us/img131/3659/xsanve6.jpg (http://imageshack.us)
On the left- 5 plants of Paph. sanderianum ('Spring Break' x 'Sam's Choice') with 8 cm leaf spans. These plants are from the sanderianum Chronicles IV and have been the fastest growing sanderianum sibling cross I have worked with to date. $20.00 per plant.
On the right- one compot of Paph. sanderianum ('Spring Break' x 'Sam's Choice') with 9 seedlings in a 4” azalea pot. Root growth is slow with sanderianum, but these are nicely established and growing plenty of leaves, so I am comfortable they are ready to venture out into the world. $100.00 for the compot.
http://img141.imageshack.us/img141/7872/xrothij9.jpg (http://imageshack.us)
On the left- 5 plants of Paph. rothschildianum ('Sam's Choice' x 'MM Best') with 8+ cm leaf spans. In the past 6 years I have dealt with 8 or 9 different roth sibling crosses, and this is the fastest growing one yet. They were quiet out of compot for a bit and then very quickly started putting out really fat leaves. $12.00 per plant.
On the right- here are several compots of Paph. rothschildianum ('Sam's Choice' x 'MM Best'). Some of the seedlings are still in quiet time, but many are starting to really take off. So I need to un-pot these and re-configure them to get like sized plants with like sized plants. As I do this, for $60.00 I will select out the best and largest 10 plants from among these compots (based on root and leaf growth) and send them to you bare root. You have the option to reserve now and then approve the selected plants in a couple of days when my work is done before you commit your funds.
http://img236.imageshack.us/img236/4051/xpeoyxy3.jpg (http://imageshack.us)
On the left- 10 plants of Paph. Prince Edward of York (sanderianum 'Red Glory' x rothschildianum 'New Dimension') with 6+ cm leaf spans. This is a very promising PEOY using a darkly colored sanderianum and one of the largest rothschildianums publicly known to date. Doing well, but this is a slower growing cross- so patience will be required. $8.00 per plant.
On the right- here are several compots of Paph. Prince Edward of York (sanderianum 'Red Glory' x rothschildianum 'New Dimension'). The seedlings are greatly variable in size within each compot, so I need to un-pot these and re-configure them to get like sized plants with like sized plants. As I do this, for $50.00 I will select out the best and largest 10 plants from among these compots (based on root and leaf growth) and send them to you bare root. You have the option to reserve now and then approve the selected plants in a couple of days when my work is done before you commit your funds.
http://img211.imageshack.us/img211/7/xasstjk7.jpg (http://imageshack.us)
On the left- 2 compots of Paph. Robianum (parishii 'Jeanie' AM/AOS x lowii 'Exotic Dancer' FCC/AOS). These have only been out of flask a few months and as you can see they are growing incredibly fast. Should be a really fun cross, and I got a really deal on the flask which I am passing on in pricing these compots. 6 plants per compot with about 6-10 cm leaf spans per plant. $30.00 per compot.
In the middle- a little something for the Catt lovers- C. jenmanii var. tipo ‘Koenigin’ AM/AOS x self. The flask was really full and so I just compotted these in clumps and as you can see they are really strong plants. Hard to count as they are so crowded, but I will guarantee 10 plants per compot. About ready for single pots. $40.00 per compot, or both compots for $70.00.
On the right- 1 compot of Paph. kolopakingii var. topperi 'Jamboree' HCC/AOS x gardneri 'Equanimity' AM/AOS. I was given a very etiolated flask of these and so I just stuck them all in a couple of compots and let them go. Very slow going at first as they acclimated, but now surging forward and looking great. This compot has 8 nice fat-leafed 5-7 cm seedlings visible up top- and a few smaller ones hiding down below. Ready to be potted out and should be a fun cross. $20.00 for the compot.
Next post below will be Phrag. kovachii, and then a post for the Vanda lovers...
Slipperguy November 11th, 2007, 06:05 PM Awesome...thnx!
elpaninaro November 11th, 2007, 06:11 PM Phragmipedium kovachii ‘Ana’ x ‘Laura’. Please see the Chronicles thread in the Phrag forum for detail on what has worked with me in growing these. They have actually been quite easy and this sibling cross is fast developing a reputation for having been the easiest to manage- so I can’t take all the credit. These plants are really starting to take off and have only been out of flask since July! They are now large enough to venture out into the world,
All compots are in 4” azalea pots. If you really just want one plant, let me know in PM and I can break a compot up. Let me know leaf span you want if you ask for a solo plant.

Left- Compot B. 2 plants- 11 cm and 9 cm leaf spans. $150.00
Middle- Compot C. 5 plants- 8 cm, 6 cm, 6cm, 4 cm, 2 cm. $200.00
Right- Compot D. 3 plants- 9 cm, 8 cm, 6 cm. $200.00
http://img406.imageshack.us/img406/4864/xk2wg0.jpg (http://imageshack.us)
Left- Compot E. 3 plants- 12 cm, 8 cm, 8 cm. $225.00
Middle- Compot F. 3 plants- 8 cm, 7 cm, 6cm. $150.00
Right- Compot G. 4 plants- 13 cm, 9 cm, 7 cm, 5 cm. $250.00
http://img125.imageshack.us/img125/2540/xk3rp7.jpg (http://imageshack.us)
Left- Compot H. 3 plants- 12 cm, 11 cm, 5 cm. $200.00
Middle- Compot I. 3 plants- 12 cm, 9 cm, 6 cm. $175.00 (the 6 cm plant had a rouge growth with split leaves but a new growth is coming out in its place, so no worries.)
Right- Compot J. 4 plants- 9 cm, 7 cm, 6 cm, 6 cm. $200.00
Ok guys, read on for the Vandas...
elpaninaro November 11th, 2007, 06:25 PM Following is a selection of Vandas from R.F. Orchids. I buy plants in the spring and summer- bloom them out to select breeding stock- and then sell the remaining flowering plants to local florists to help offset my investment.
I bought heavy this year since there were some killer crosses coming out, and going into winter I have some excess unbloomed plants that I might not have room for over the winter.
http://img144.imageshack.us/img144/8158/xhwoy1.jpg (http://imageshack.us)
3 big blooming size seedlings of Vanda Harvey Wong (V. Adelaide Skoglund X V. Fuchs Delight). This is an old school cross for big plants with big dark flowers. Huge seedlings - all this size or larger. $50.00 each.
http://img99.imageshack.us/img99/9996/xwdbyg9.jpg (http://imageshack.us)
2 big blooming size seedlings of Vanda Wanda diBenedetto (V. Doctor Anek X V. Sirisak). Another big Vanda cross with large flowers, great substance and intense fuschia to purple colors- One of the 2 big ones shown- $40.00 each. One smaller seedling just about blooming size (not pictured)- $30.00.
http://img152.imageshack.us/img152/1724/xsomts7.jpg (http://imageshack.us)
1 large blooming size seedling of V. Somsri Delight (V. Bitz's Heartthrob X V. Kasem's Delight) with its first keikei already! I bloomed out a few of these this year and they were all in nice shades of pink- some pink throughout and one with a nice two-tone sanderiana type pattern. Actual plant for sale pictured- $35.00
http://img144.imageshack.us/img144/5130/xsomselme7.jpg (http://imageshack.us)
1 seedling that has already flowered- and here is a shot of the bloom. Nice size (over 4 inches) and showing much promise. I got a Crownfox Celestial Delight that flowered pink after this one and is more in line with my breeding plans, so will sell this one. Asking $50.00.
http://img152.imageshack.us/img152/4488/xccdxn0.jpg (http://imageshack.us)
6 large blooming sized seedlings of Vanda Crownfox Celestial Delight (V. Fuchs Blue 'Robert' AM/AOS X V. Doctor Anek) - one of the most promising Vanda hybrids I have seen in many years. I have flowered out 6 of these so far and 2 were worthy of saving for breeding (see my posts of them in the non-Paph gallery), another 3 were well above average, and 1 was merely very nice (but flowered on a tiny plant and could get much better with age.) R.F. Orchids just got an AQ on this cross too. There are going to be a lot of awards here, and perhaps the next generation of top breeding stock as well. You don’t get odds like that too often- and while most of these are purple, there is the occasional sizzling pink as well. Best part- these spike very easily. $40.00 per plant.
Okay, that’s all I got! Past experience tells me that most interest will come in the first day, so I will keep close tabs on PMs and post summary updates below of what is left as needed. I know some of you have my email address, but please use PM for ordering so I have a clear line on who asked for what first.
Take care,
Tom.
orchidlover November 12th, 2007, 08:43 AM They are beautiful plants and it's nice to see support for the forum. Thank you!
elpaninaro November 13th, 2007, 08:59 AM Due to lack of interest, the above offering is cancelled so I can prepare to offer the plants in other venues.
Tom.
elpaninaro November 13th, 2007, 09:31 PM Hi again everyone,
The sale is back on again.
I apologize for being so reactive after only 24 hours. I had expected some interest- especially from a few people who had asked me a while ago for kovachii and have now all basically told me they don't want them anymore, and so I was ticked because while this sale was coming- the timing is driven by a very special acquisition I am about to make in another of my hobby interests. It is an opportunity I have been waiting for many years- and it has finally come and I have been pooling all the cash I can lol.
Long story short, I was frustrated realizing I could have been eBaying this week instead- even though I prefer to sell here to serious enthusiasts and support SOF rather than fund eBay.
Well, not long after I cancelled this sale PMs started coming in with people saying they were interested, but just taking some time to think over the offering.
So I did act in haste, and I am sorry- and all is back on.
At this point the following is SOLD,
bellatulum- 5 sold, 26 left for sale
rothschildianum- SOLD OUT
Prince Edward of York- 5 sold, 5 remain for sale
malipoense- 1 large compot sold, 2 large compots and the small compot remaining
kovachii- compot F is sold
This afternoon I ordered a case of heat packs that should be here early next week. Shipping can start the Monday after Thanksgiving, and until then browse at your leisure and let me know if you have any questions. Thanks everyone!
Take care,
Tom.
latsyrc November 14th, 2007, 12:55 AM Hi,Tom,what is the cost including mail postage to zip code 92618 on the comp. B for Phragmipedium kovachii.thanks,
Andy
elpaninaro November 14th, 2007, 06:04 PM Hi Andy,
Priority mail shipping for any of the compots would be $6 for the first compot and $1 for each additional one. That is a 2-3 delivery time frame. UPS or FedEx 2 day is possible too, but I do not have accounts there and so the cost is insane- about $30 after the latest rate hikes.
I will have heat packs in next week as well, and will use them as needed at no extra charge to buyers.
Tom.
latsyrc November 15th, 2007, 09:34 AM Tom,I forget to ask if they are ship in pot?thanks
Andy
elpaninaro November 15th, 2007, 10:23 PM Hi Andy,
Yes- for the kovachii I would ship in pot. They do not like getting too dry and so in pot is best.
Take care,
Tom.
elpaninaro November 25th, 2007, 10:28 PM Good evening all,
Thank you to the many who responded! With this post I hereby close the offering.
I appreciate all your purchases and wanted to congratulate all buyers since a portion of your purchase has been designated to a nearly $100 donation to support SOF- and so we'll make it an even $100!
Take care,
Tom.
Paphraguy November 26th, 2007, 09:34 AM Thanks, Tom!
Justin November 30th, 2007, 08:17 PM Mine arrived today! Thanks Tom!
