I just got some plants that were being cleared out of a well known NZ nursery, via a third party (if you get what I mean). I would value opinions on what you think the breeder was trying to achieve. They are all a couple of years from flowering so I'm going to have to be patient, but it can't hurt to wonder.

Deperle x bellatulum - Has now been registered as Sussex Pearl (don't know why it wasn't written that way on the label!). A very nice white, it will be interesting to see how much marking and pink colour comes through.

Lady Isobel x micranthum - Well, the dorsal and petals will not lack markings, will they? The lip should be interesting, and I hope it will have a good multifloral display. The plant is not particularly big or small, and has some slight tesselation. This cross has not been registered but should look alot like the Gloria Naugle and Jim Kie primary hybrids (hard to tell them apart).

St Swithin x henryanum - This one is the biggest head-scratcher of the lot. How can you improve on St Swithin? I suppose he was trying to get some brighter colours into the flowers and maybe decrease the plant size. There is already alot of markings on both parents. This would look much like Dolliroth (x roth), and the phil cross hasn't been registered. What does Dolliroth look like?

I also picked up a P.armeniacum that is a division of a plant that received an AM last year.

I have also just ordered laevigatum, haynaldianum & bullenianum, but I haven't told my wife yet. Shhhhhhh........

The registered name comes after plants have bloomed so plant tags have already been printed with the cross used. It would not make sense to reprint tags & the plants have probably been sold & have gone elsewhere, so I just right it on the back of the tag.
I agree with your thought on the St.Swithin x henry. Can you see it now - a spotted St.? It would be nice to have a reduced plant size & one that flowers more frequently but that might be asking a bit much at this stage!

St Swithin might be close to Paph Pebbelpath. You might find pictures if you google it.

Good idea Ross. I found one. I suppose the petals will be alot longer, and the colours less bright without the cochlopetalum input.
