Got this from a nursery in Malaysia, and the nursery owner told me he dunno what this is, just said it is "new species" and maybe coccineum.
Anyway I managed to flower this little paph, and it looks like maybe areeanum (natural hybrid between villosum and barbigerum), what do you think?

Dear Thong,
Paph. x areeanum is the same plant which was described later as Paph. rhizomatosum. In the description of both you could see the typical growth.
Yours looks like a regional form of barbigerum. This species is so variabel, that different forms were described as distinct species, like the coccineum and also areeanum, and perhaps also vejvarutianum.

Could you show us also a picture of the whole plant and the flower from side.

Best greetings

Maybe the nursery owner made the hybrid himself, and pretended that they are new species:hyper:
Of course , I am only joking. But someone actuallly voiced that thought once on the forum.
Nice flower, though, wonder if you could keep breeding it down the line until the whole dorsal solidly dark.

Could it be Wossner helene?

Dear Hien,
I don't think so, that it is Paph. Wössner Helene.
There are so many different forms of Paph. barbigerum from different locations, that it could be possible that it is a intensive coloured form of.

Dear Hien,
It is most unlikely the nurseryman made this hybrid because we are in the hot lowland tropics and growing such paphs are already difficult, let alone flowering them and even making a seed pod!

Dear Thong,
I have seen some months ago a picture of a very similar plant which comes from Laos to Thailand. Perhaps a regional form of barbigerum.
The plant doesn't look like a Paph. areeanum (or rhizomatosum)

Here the picture of the typeplant

and the flower of

There exist also darker coloured clones.

OK, so it is a variety of barbigerum. Interestingly I have another pot of barbigerum whose leaves are half the size!

Dear Thong,
the smallest I have seen in flower had leaves with only 2 cm length.
The variability of this species is really spectacular.

:hyper: that's really cool~ how does the flower size compare to barbigerums with larger LS?

I can just imagine using the tiniest of barbigerum (and similar) to create, not teacup paphs, but shooter-glass paphs.. everyone can have hundreds of them growing on a single windowsill~! lol~ :p

The flowersize was a little bit smaller then the normal one.
But the plant was not mine, so I cannot imagine how big the plant was in the next year.

There shall be sometimes in the nature such small plants which grow under artificial conditions in the greenhouse to bigger plants.

Yes, that would be nice, imagine so many of them inside a glass case. But then need to breed some colours into them: barbigerum colours can be a bit...err....drab.

I think your barbigerum has excellent colouration to breed deeply coloured paphs.
