View Full Version : Fertilizing Phrags?
IdahoOrchid September 12th, 2007, 11:05 PM In another thread the author mentions that they fertilize their phags....
:surprise:
OK, this goes against EVERYTHING I have ever heard about phrags. Maybe it is just for besseae?
HELP! I have a Chuck Acker that is not very green but has good roots. Maybe this is the clue? Should I start fertilizating my phrags?
smartie2000 September 13th, 2007, 12:50 AM ...I fertilize my phrags just like my other plants....as long as they stay moist they won't have so many problems with burns
Miss Kovachii September 13th, 2007, 01:37 AM .... just like my paphs. Is that a no-no?

phrag guy September 13th, 2007, 07:29 AM I fertilize my phrags every time I water and on the 4th give clean water. I have no problems with them.
thoth7 September 13th, 2007, 07:55 AM I fertilize all my orchids at each watering. Sometimes this amounts to twice a week. Currently, lot's of blooms (phrags included).

IdahoOrchid September 13th, 2007, 08:20 AM So......
MYTH BUSTED???
Paphraguy September 13th, 2007, 09:25 AM I fertilize my Phrags also but not as much as I used to.
budsbud September 13th, 2007, 10:09 AM I fertilize at every watering and flush once a month...just like paphs.
goldenrose September 13th, 2007, 11:09 AM  where else would a potted plant derive it nutrients if one wasn't fertilizing?
Bill Zimmerman September 13th, 2007, 11:23 AM I stepped up my fertilizing program this growing season, and it has paid big dividends. The phrags are rich green compared to lighter green without fertilizer and they are growing faster. Of course, now that the days will be getting shorter and the temperatures drop, I will be cutting back.
orchidlover September 13th, 2007, 11:36 AM All plants need to "eat". LOL
Dwayne Dibbley September 13th, 2007, 02:28 PM In s/h i fert 1 watering then straight rainwater the next.Do this year round but in the growroom during winter this is basically a 1 week cycle(fert on Sunday , rainwater on Wednesday).
Orchidmagicboy September 13th, 2007, 03:53 PM I fertilize at every watering and flush once a month...just like paphs.
Me to! And they grow very well.
Nynaeve September 13th, 2007, 04:19 PM I admit I am the WORST when it comes to fertilizing on a regular schedule. Finally a few days ago I decided I am going to try something new. I am trying a pelletized fertilizer for all my orchids. I am using a product called "Dynamite" that was recommended by someone in my orchid society. It is a balanced (13-13-13) fertilizer and you only have to sprinkle it once every NINE months. So I put it on all my orchids (except for my deciduous ones) last Sunday and we shall see how they respond. I am thinking one of my biggest cultural issues is fertilizing on a regular basis. I wonder if that is why I am so slow to get blooms on some of my BS plants. Heck it could be something else. But at least this way I will eliminate one factor.
I burned the poo out of a couple of my plants trying to give them more light. Curses.

That is what I wondered, but the person that said this was respected. Darned if I can remember exactly WHO it was though.
This just goes to show how important CORRECT information is for new people.

You actually heard a person say this? :roll:I thought maybe you read it somewhere in an outdated book, where they used a different media or maybe they thought the plant would derive the nutrients from the media?:confused:I almost said toss that book out, burn it!:p

Heard, read, same difference. I actually got this "information" from an online discussion.
OK, Mr. Chuck Acker, time to feed you and my other phrag too.
