View Full Version : disease is killing all my plants
mikemart August 28th, 2007, 01:04 AM Suddenly many of my plants have dropped all their leaves. Is there any hope for a Paphiopedilum if all its leaves have turned yellow/brown and fallen off? Is it possible for the leaves to grow back? The roots look healthy...
budsbud August 28th, 2007, 01:26 AM OMG!!!! I'm not an expert but it doesn't sound good. Did you figure out what caused it? Did you treat them?
leehericks August 28th, 2007, 01:47 AM pictures? Or are they all seriously leafless?
Ron-NY August 28th, 2007, 07:26 AM YIKES!! Have you ID'ed the cause???
Nynaeve August 28th, 2007, 07:40 AM What is your culture regimen? Any sudden change in culture? Can you post pics?
Paphy57 August 28th, 2007, 09:33 AM YUCK!! Post pictures immediatly!!!
Paphraguy August 28th, 2007, 09:41 AM Sounds like your plants have been overwatered but it could be anything. Tell us about your culture and post photos if you can.

Is this the recent heatwave?
If it is a special disease, they probably will die.
On the other hand, when they lose the main lead, the growth hormone changes destination, they sprout multi leads at the base.
I have a 1 growth primulinum that loses the only lead because of insect, it sprouts back with 6,7 leads in a matter of a month or so, now it is a multi growths plant
mikemart August 28th, 2007, 11:05 AM Hi guys, in my first post I meant to say "Phalaenopsis"...all the Phalaenopsis are affected. This is after a very long, beautiful season of repeated blooming!!
Both my Paphs, my Oncidium, and my Zygopetalum are all fine.
This did happen after a long heatwave a few weeks ago -- all the plants are indoors and if anything they were underwatered for a period of two weeks or so...they started dropping leaves I thought due to underwatering, so I watered them. Soon the leaves and the "stem" area the leaves sprout from were turning splotchy and brown...
Many of them were in the same enclosed indoor greenhouse sharing a humidifer which is probably nasty inside.. another one was in a different part of the room and still got what was coming to it.

orchidlover August 28th, 2007, 12:31 PM I think you answered your own question and got to the root of the problem and that is under watering. Heat and under watering can kill plants in no time.
Ron-NY August 28th, 2007, 03:19 PM heat, humidity and not enough air circulation along with the under watering could lead to many problems
mikemart August 28th, 2007, 03:22 PM Well, actually the greenhouse has tons of air circulation...but it might have been pulling in nasty air from the humidifer..
budsbud August 28th, 2007, 04:49 PM Wow....just two weeks?
My mom gave me a phal that was really dead looking. I think it was way underwatered. I repotted it and cut all the dead roots off. There were almost no roots left. As the only two leaves were dying two new leaves started growing out. I hope yours do too. I think once the leaves are gone the plant is gone! I could be wrong though...I'm just reasoning through here and not speaking from experience. I was just careful to water correctly and resisted the urge to overwater the plant!!! I kept it covered with plastic with a hole cut for some ventilation. I also played "cheerleader" and really acknowleged the plant for hanging on and kept telling it how good it looked...hahaha! I hope yours will be fine!!!!
Paphy57 August 28th, 2007, 08:10 PM Oh man those are dryed out!! It looks like they just came from the desert!!!
Nynaeve August 28th, 2007, 09:34 PM Well thank goodness they weren't slippers! :D
Yeah, I think they are toast....sorry!:(
hjohn August 28th, 2007, 09:34 PM Lets see what you have, send some pics.

mikemart November 8th, 2007, 08:17 AM Guys, I returned my leafless plants to a humid environment with regular watering and EVERY SINGLE PLANT has sprouted brand new leaves and I believe will make a complete recovery. I am so glad I didn't throw all the leafless plants in the trash, as I had seriously considered! It's so nice to see the bright green baby leaves sprouting out of the hard, dry brown/black that once held so many big leaves.

You did great!
Justin November 8th, 2007, 09:42 AM AWESOME!!! I thought they were goners for sure.
nothing feels better than bringing back a plant, although these days i'm so over-run with various houseplants that if anything gets sick it goes right in the compost pile...I have to focus on the slipper collection so no time/space/energy to spend on nursing others.... Congrats on bringing back your phals!
mikemart November 8th, 2007, 09:50 AM Thanks, guys. I should say that all six plants that were saved were Phalaenopsis.
Paphraguy November 8th, 2007, 09:55 AM :clap2: Great news! Good job saving them!
orchidlover November 8th, 2007, 02:58 PM Congratulations!
