A friend of mine has approx. a 400 square foot greenhouse over packed with a mixed collection of orchids. Probable 1/2 of them are phals. He asked me what I use to get rid of mealie bugs and scale. I told him Enstar. In order for Enstar to work well it needs to reach most of the plant, so that probable won't be a good answer for him. He specifically asked about using an aerosol bomb and has access to attain or orthene. I've used orthene wettable powder but not a aerosol bomb. Has anyone used either of these aerosols in a hobby greenhouse? If so how did they work? He stated he thought he needed to use one can then wait one week and set off another can. Any and all help would be appreciated.
Thanks

If they weren't mealie bugs & scale. It's probably going to be effective on the bugs above the soil line & hopefully a week later would get those below the soil line for they are able to lay eggs. My gut feeling is no.

Bob, Glen uses aerosol bombs but I am unsure of the product. I know it works great on aphids and mealies but am unsure of scale. I recently had an outbreak of scale in my Catt collection. I am manually cleaning them with alcohol and a tooth brush and then treating with a systemic...Merit.

I have used bug bombs in a greenhouse in the past, but mine were the light-a-fuse-and-leave type. It was useless. It was an old greenhouse that I was renting and wanted to clean up before I put valuable plants in, and I might as well have not bothered.
As for the Aerosol type I would need to make sure that there was ALOT of air movement in there to make sure that the chemical was evenly distributed and got to all parts of the plants, much like a ULV spray system. This means he would need to have fans running the mix the air while the spray is working.
Personally I would reach for the Merit.

not to nitpick, but technically, mealies are a type of scale...
