View Full Version : Which gigantic multifloral would you buy?

So... I have an opportunity to buy a half flat (100-120 seedlings) of either:

Paph. kolopakingii v. topperi x self

or

Paph. gigantifolium x topperi

Either would have to be at least a meter of leafspan before bloom, so I'd need to build a new greenhouse to grow out both flats... But I'm thinking about getting one of them. If you had to choose, which would you get? And yes, you can have some...

Oh no! You're bad! You and those rules! :disappointed:
(I'm one to talk, I now have two new kolo hybrids, one of which is 25" - I thought at $15 it would be a wee babe!)

It is a hard choice. I think I'd go w/ the species, especially as I don't yet have one, but the novelty of a gigantifolium cross is tugging at my heartstrings....

Where did you find a 25" kolopakingii hybrid for 15 dollars? Are you stealing again? :poke:

I'm having the same problem... The hybrid just sounds so darned interesting. I really would have to build a new greenhouse to bloom out both flats, though.

Since I prefer species and I already have a kolo, I choose the var topperi. If that hybrid was a gigantifolium species, I would have picked the gigantifolium. They are huge plants.

Ratcliffe - Bel Royale. It's gorgeous too, nice mature growth and a new one. hehehe...

Susan got one too! :D They threw in a Temptation as a bonus, also...

I think Temptation is the problem, not the answer... *grin*

Exactly! The funny thing was, I couldn't decide which I wanted more, Temptation or Bel Royale, and wouldn't you know, now I have both!

I would buy Paph kolopakingii var topperi since I prefer species. It produces more flowers. Paph gigantifolium leaves can reach 24 inches and up to 5-6 inches wide. It produces 3 to 7 flowers at most.

Gigantifolium hybrid will allow you to reach epic size the fastest.

Gigantifolium. But if you can't decide, get both, you can always send some to me until you need them back. :D

I'd go for the species, as the hybrid doesn't sound that interesting...at this point, with gigantifolium just becoming available, I'd think that gigantifolium itself would be more interesting, rather than a cross with something similar. Then again, when Ho Chi Minh first got registered and photographed, I thought it was a waste to cross such similar paphs....then I actually saw one in bloom....and I understood..................! Take care, Eric

Littlefrog,

Without seeing the actually parents, I would probably go with the topperi.

Thanks

I bet gigantefolium crosses grow much faster then kolopakingii var. topperii. I will be having my flasks of gigantefolium x niveum very soon and I will be able to test it out !!

Hehe , I voted for both because space isn't a problem for me ! :D

I voted for the topperri. I like species a little more than hybrids. Anything we can do to preserve the future of these beauts. You can always make the hybrid later if you wanted too.

I'm still a species snob so I'd stick with the topperi.

Either one is a good excuse for a new greenhouse though
